Q&A with David Giambruno, Senior Vice President and CIO at Revlon

Recently we sat down with David Giambruno, Senior Vice President and CIO at Revlon, to learn how they are leveraging  NetApp infrastructure and turning IT into a competitive weapon to deliver more for the business - only faster, cheaper and better.

To start off can you tell us a bit about your role and responsibilities at Revlon?

David Giambruno: Sure. As Revlon’s Senior Vice President and CIO I’m in charge of driving global technology capabilities to provide competitive advantages to the company’s business units and shareholders.

What was the state of IT when you began at Revlon?

DG:  When I joined in 2006, Revlon IT was seen as an impediment to the business. Web mail didn’t exist, company laptops didn’t work overseas, and offices didn’t have WiFi. My first task was simply to get IT out of the way of the business.

So how did you go about tackling that task?

DG: It all started by instituting a philosophy of brutal simplicity and by standardizing our systems and technology on a global scale. That’s where NetApp came into the picture.

Why did you choose NetApp to be Revlon’s single storage and data management technology?

DG: For us it was the “oneness” of the solutions that simplified administration, enabling IT administrators to achieve a greater command of the technology and deliver more for the business with no increase in costs.

What benefits have you seen from making this IT infrastructure transformation?

DG: We’ve reduced the time to deliver IT projects by 70% and increased the number of projects by 425%. Incremental costs, hardware footprint, and installation time have been eliminated. Effectively, NetApp has enabled the business to achieve these results while avoiding an investment of more than $70 million.

How do those findings translate to the way that you do business in your industry?

DG: In our industry, it’s all about the speed of business and delivering capabilities. Simplification equals speed, and that speed provides agility. Now we are able to do what the business need but faster, cheaper, and better.
