Snap Creator 4.1 Available Now!

We’re excited to announce that version 4.1 of the NetApp® Snap Creator™ Framework has just been released.

It is available for download at:

The NetApp Snap Creator Framework empowers you to standardize and simplify data protection for a wide variety of hypervisors, applications, and databases.  Snap Creator uses a Server/Agent architecture and works on multiple operating systems (Windows, Linux, AIX, Solaris, and HP-UX).

By leveraging Snapshot, SnapVault®, Open Systems SnapVault (OSSV), and SnapMirror, as well as OnCommand Unified Manager 5.2, and FlexClone, Snap Creator provides:

  • Application-consistent data protection: You get a centralized solution for backing up critical information, integrating with existing application architectures to assure data consistency and reduce operating costs.
  • Extensibility: You achieve fast integration using modular architecture and policy-based automation.
  • Cloud readiness: Operating system-independent Snap Creator functionality supports physical and virtual platforms and interoperates with IT-as-a-service and cloud environments.
  • Cloning capability: Space efficient data cloning is supported for development and test purposes.

The following illustration shows the high level functions of Snap Creator as well as the supported and prepackaged plugins:

All New Snap Creator Agent

Version 4.1 of the Snap Creator Framework introduces a redesigned Snap Creator Agent.  This new agent was completely rewritten in Java and allows for enhanced scalability and security.  The 4.1 agent is multithreaded on all supported operating systems and supports new Java plugins while keeping compatibility with all of the existing plugins offered by Snap Creator.

Security Enhancements

Snap Creator 4.1 also offers several security enhancements.  Most notably, Snap Creator 4.1 uses HTTPS communications for the Snap Creator Server, Agent, GUI, and CLI.  All communications in Snap Creator 4.1 occur over HTTPS.

Snap Creator 4.1 also introduces a CLI Credentials Store.  In version 4.0 when using the CLI credentials were stored globally.  In version 4.1 storing CLI credentials is on a per user basis, meaning each individual user can store their unique credentials.

Policy Objects

Snap Creator 4.1 introduces Policy Objects.  Traditionally in Snap Creator retention policies are stored in the configuration file and schedules are stored separately in the scheduler.  Policy Objects allow you to create a retention policy and schedule that can be applied at the Snap Creator Profile level. This means that a retention policy and schedule can be set identically for all configurations within a profile. This can be especially useful when setting up tiers or SLA based retention policies within your environment.

New Plugin for SAP HANA

Snap Creator 4.1 adds a new supported plugin for SAP® HANA.  SAP HANA is an in-memory database platform.  This plugin has been in the Snap Creator Community for some time and is now being moved into a fully supported status. For questions about SAP HANA and associated solutions please contact

Support for Data ONTAP 8.2.1

Snap Creator 4.1 includes support for Data ONTAP 8.2.1 operating in both 7-Mode and clustered Data ONTAP. Along with the support for Data ONTAP 8.2, Snap Creator 4.1 supports SnapVault and Consistency Group Snapshots in clustered Data ONTAP 8.2 environments.
