Take Total Control of your Data While Seamlessly Moving to Microsoft Azure

SignUpMicrosoftAzure_960.jpgApplications and workloads are the next battlegrounds for organisations to move to the public cloud, but the challenges presented in moving traditional services to hyperscale providers, combined with data sovereignty, workload placement and reduced risk if it doesn’t work is proving to be a considerable challenge to many organisations.

NetApp have been providing data management solutions to customers for over 20 years, allowing them to store, protect and manage their data sets utilising the existing business processes, tools and teams to deliver innovative solutions for success.

As customers’ strategies have evolved to move workloads outside of their data centres and utilise cloud services, NetApp have worked with over 175 service provider partners to develop cloud services underpinned by the same NetApp efficiencies to enable customers to seamlessly connect to any cloud.

This strategy was extended to enable these same customers and services providers to connect new, or existing NetApp storage platforms directly to hyperscale partners such as Amazon, SoftLayer and now Microsoft Azure.

The recent announcement of NetApp Private Storage for Azure, provides further choice for the enterprise to seamlessly utilise on premise private cloud solutions built on Microsoft, and the power of the Azure cloud with a common data fabric provided by NetApp.

If you have invested in a Microsoft Private Cloud, with NetApp storage at the foundation, the path to connecting to Azure is quite straightforward. NetApp have worked with the Microsoft Azure team to develop comprehensive solution architecture and deployment guides that provide all of the detail necessary to utilise the ExpressRoute offerings from Microsoft with NetApp’s Clustered Data ONTAP® storage operating system.

Utilising ExpressRoute partners, such as Equinix Data Centres, NetApp have validated the performance and latency between the NetApp device and Microsoft’s Azure compute instances.

This solution gives customers the ability to spin up test and development environments at a reduced cost with the high performance of enterprise-grade storage. All the storage efficiency features that customers use today are available in NetApp Private Storage for Azure.

Other deployment scenarios that this is useful for is from a disaster recovery (DR) perspective; replicate, utilising NetApp’s SnapMirror technology from your on-premise private cloud into a colocation facility that contains a NetApp controller, switch and an ExpressRoute connection. You can now spin up compute as required, effectively driving down the costs of cold DR due to the public cloud compute.

Data is critical to an organisation. Our goal is to empower you to use that data efficiently and effectively to create a competitive edge at the lowest cost possible.

Do your applications have to run non-stop? If the answer is yes, consider deploying it on your private cloud infrastructure by moving the Hyper-V virtual machine from Azure and onto your Microsoft private cloud. On the other hand, if the application is only going to run in short cycles such as end of month, or for a particular event, then leave it in the public cloud and build a policy to spin it down when it’s no longer required while keeping the data under your control and jurisdiction for the entire process.

NetApp Private Storage for Azure reduces the guessing game of moving a workload to the public cloud by allowing you to utilise all of the features and benefits of Azure, but with the confidence that if it doesn’t perform to the requirements you need, or deliver the benefits cloud promises, you can easily turn off the compute instances and re-point your data to compute that is provided on your existing cloud.

Is your organization already using cloud computing services? If so, did you choose your service provider based on reputation, or the hype surrounding cloud and what it can deliver in terms of cost, agility and control?

By providing an enterprise shared storage platform that business are comfortable with using and combining the benefits of public clouds, NetApp helps organisations further realise the benefits a hybrid cloud solution can bring, while giving them total control of their data.
