What’s On Our Partners’ and Customers’ Minds? Workflow Automation for NetApp Cloud Environments.

By Kristina Brand, OnCommand Product Marketing

Having just returned from NetApp Insight in Dublin, a technical conference for NetApp sales engineers and partners, I though I’d share some key themes that came through in conversations about NetApp OnCommand. Businesses are continuing to virtualize and implement private cloud environments. Some are also looking at implementing a hybrid cloud and the benefits that it offers.  The common need that was shared by all was simplicity in management, so that their business can continue to optimize efficiency and control costs.

Many of the Insight delegates were already familiar with the NetApp’s management tools such as System Manager and Unified Manager. For those who mange a few NetApp systems, they showed appreciation for the simplicity of System Manager. Those who manage ten or more NetApp systems were also familiar with Unified Manager or the legacy products: DataFabric Manager, Operations Manager, Provisioning Manager, and Protection Manager.  There were a number of delegates who were less familiar with OnCommand Report and Workflow Automation, so I thought I’d quickly touch upon them at a high level.

OnCommand Report builds on the reporting capabilities of Unified Manager (or DFMs) by providing a single view of your NetApp inventory and capacity. It is a flexible, enterprise reporting solution with over fifty standard reports and the ability to create custom reports. In fact, the OnCommand Report community has a Report Store or report sharing area with a variety of custom templates available today. There is also an OnCommand Report demo video and video on how to create custom reports. So if you need roll-up reporting of multiple servers, OnCommand Report serves this purpose.

NetApp storage Workflow Automation was another product of great interest to many. Insight delegates liked that they could quickly create workflows, for provisioning, migrating or decommissioning storage, in just a few minutes. This is a big time saver for storage teams and architects, especially when working in a NetApp cloud environment. If you were not able attend Insight, you can learn more about NetApp automation on the Workflow Automation community.

The NetApp Insight event in Dublin was a great opportunity for me to meet countless NetApp sales engineers and partners, and get a good understanding of what is important to them and how we help them. I appreciated their candid feedback and questions, invaluable information that I have started sharing with our OnCommand product teams. I look forward to another exciting and educational NetApp Insight in 2013.

Thanks again for stopping by at Insight in Las Vegas and Dublin, and your interest in Workflow Automation. We're anticipating the upcoming OnCommand Workflow Automation 2.0 very release soon , so STAY TUNED!
