SMSQL 6.0 error : Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

JEANFRANCOISRIERA

Hi,

Last week, I upgrade my SMSQL 5.1 to 6.0. Now I have an error in backup jobs.

There is a timeout with the transaction log backup with truncate task exactly 10 minutes after the task starts. In SMSQL 5.1 tasks could take about 25 minutes with no timeout...

I didn't find any parameters about this timeout in SMSQL.

SnapManager 6.0 for Microsoft SQL Server (SMSQL) transaction log backup fails with "Timeout expired"

http://support.netapp.com/NOW/cgi-bin/bol?Type=Detail&Display=660615

Description

Formatted

In SnapManager 6.0 for Microsoft SQL Server, if a transaction log backup

takes more than 10 minutes, it will fail with error

[SQL SMO Error]: Backup failed for Server 'SOMEW'.

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch.

Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the

operation or the server is not responding.

Workaround

Formatted

Add a DWORD registry "LogBackupUseSMO" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\

Network Appliance\SnapManager for SQL Server\Server and set it to 0,

then restart SnapMgrService.

Notes

Formatted

In SMSQL 6.0, SnapManager for SQL uses a different method than in prior

releases for backing up transaction logs, and this method has a timeout

of 10 minutes.

Note the above mentioned workaround does not support copy-only log backup.

SHALEVSIS

A few days ago 6.0.1 was released. One of the bugs this release address is the timeout you're experiencing.

Try updating your SMSQL to 6.0.1

txskibum2000

Well, i rolled back from 6.0 to 5.2P1.  No more issues.  I will stay away from 6.x unless I need it for Win2012 or something else.

txskibum2000

Im having this problem too..

bazmercer

Hi,

What's the "remote query timout" set to? Server properties>connections. I think it defaults to ten minutes, though why it worked with smsql5.1 and not 6 is a mystery.
