Hello All,

I need some help in housekeeping the netapp FS. I am new to this technology. I have been working on unix since past 3 years but somehow i am not able to get a grip on netapp.

How do i housekeep the FS/ volume in netapp filer. As you see the volume is 90% utilized.

I cannot run the find command here.

What are the ways of volume administration in netapp. After googling for 2 days i just found that snapshot rotation is a housekeeping method.

How are snapshots rotated.

/vol/prod_data/         3891GB     3520GB      370GB      90%  /vol/prod_data/
/vol/prod_data/.snapshot      204GB      117GB       87GB      57%  /vol/prod_data/.snapshot

Thanks

Sunny

Hi Sunny,

Please refer this link http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/ontap/rel732_vs/pdfs/ontap/smg.pdf ,look for volume operations which would give you an idea of managing the Volume.

If you could also share if there is anything particular in volume administration you are looking at then it would be more helpful.

Hi Sunny,

For your requirement you need to either NFS / CIFS mount the volume on a host to read the FileSystem

And there FSRM feature in Operations Manager, which can do a file walk on the FileSystem (mounted) & give you a detailed report on the FS (FileSystem) say like Largest files, least accessed files etc.

Let me know if you need more info on FSRM.

This is what i was looking for....

Prasad,

the volume is already mounted on a linux server. I logged into the web interfce for this filer. The operations manager was disabled. I tried to enable it, but there is a thing i am missing. I need to enter the IP of "DataFabric Manager Server". what is "DataFabric Manager Server" ??

Thanks

Sunny

Logging into web interface of this filer should have taken you to a tool called Filer View which is a storag

e management tool ,which only gives you data about the used

space of volume and also options to manage the volume. However in order to check

which files are unwanted you would have to mount the volume and manu

ally check each and every file and the space used by them, If there are fil

es which are not required and are occupying space then you might have to delete them. However be careful

and cross check twice before deleting data or files, make sure you don't need them .

Also you can check them using DFM .Another option would be to re

size the volume so that you can increase the space by which you can have more data in the volume.Examine the pros and cons before going ahead with different options available.
