Does anybody know if the FCOE standard will support 1GB at some point and not require 10GB.

I don't think so.

FCoE is meant to run ontop of Enhanced (or Datacenter) Ethernet, not a stantard one will all know & use widely today.

Two key differences vs. bog-standard TCP/IP are it is a) loss-less, b) packets delivery order is guaranteed (as in 'traditional' FC network).

The starting point speed-wise for Enhanced Ethernet is 10Gbit & I'd guess it will only grow over time!
