Ransomware attacks are ever present and ever growing.  Just a few months ago, a pipeline operator here in the states was the victim of a ransomware attack, shutting down the flow of fuel and creating chaos at gas stations all along the east coast.  Not a lot of fun.

NetApp can help you protect your data and business operations with backup, recovery, and policy enforcement technology designed to mitigate the impact of a ransomware attack. For example, downtime represents the largest portion of the cost when recovering from a ransomware attack.  NetApp ONTAP helps to eliminate significant downtime with its rapid recovery capabilities.  NetApp’s Matt Trudewind discusses avoiding downtime and other ransomware protection capabilities in this short video.  You can also see how it all comes together in this animated video

NetApp Active IQ plays a role as well.  Not only can Active IQ help eliminate security vulnerabilities, we’re adding new insights and guidance specific to protecting against ransomware. A new dedicated wellness card shows the actions needed and the risks addressed, so you can be sure your systems are protected.

Risks and actions tracked in the Ransomware Defense wellness area will include things like:

  • Volume snapshot count is low decreasing potential Ransomware protection
  • FPolicy is not enabled for all vservers configured for NAS protocols

And more.

As you saw in the animated video, enabling FPolicy is an easy way to block malicious file extensions.  Not only does Active IQ uncover systems not using FPolicy, but it can build an Ansible playbook that will automatically enable FPolicy on all impacted systems, making it easy to address this critical security risk.

Active IQ is a core component of NetApp's protect, detect, and recovery capabilities.  It is available to all customers who have an active support contract. Watch this short video to learn more about Active IQ, or get started now using your NetApp Support Site (NSS) login.

I also recommend Matt's blog series on ransomware, which you can find here.
