Probably a basic question but I just wanted to get this clarified by others.

We use 7-mode and all our volumes are thin provisioned flex vols. All LUNs are thin provisioned as well and these are presented to VMware as datastores. We use deduplication as well.

My question is if we have a datastore running low, we would expand the flexvol and also resize the LUN, but my question is do we need to expand the flexvol? some of the volumes we are realising some subsantial savings and so the flexvol can have tons of available space whereas the lun could be running near capacity.

We use block level storage via FC so I am aware already that we need to run space savings to commands to reclaim the free space on a LUN, which we do often but I just had this question and was interested how others tackle this.

For failed disks that still can be unfailed we use disk sanitization for wiping out any data before we return the disk to NetApp. To use disk sanitization we had to activate the option "licensed_feature.disk_sanitization.enable". After activation, this option can't be deactivated anymore. This is clearly documented in the command reference of the option.

In contrast to this the documentation of the sanitazation is very vague in regard to the consequences: "Attention: After disk sanitization is enabled on a storage system, it is permanent, and it prevents certain Data ONTAP commands from being run." (Storage Management Guide) We had to painfully learn that one of the commands that is prevented from being run is the vol move command. Before activating the option we used vol move without problems. Afterwards it threw an error message saying that vol move requires a Snapmirror license now.

In a case opened for this it was pointed out that this was for security reasons. Since we do not use Snapmirror we didn't have a licence and had to procure it. After adding the license vol move worked fine again. This occured with 7-Mode ONTAP 8.1.3 and I requested a documentation update on this. But it hasn't been incorporated in 8.3.1 yet.

Are there any experiences on what doesn't work in conesquence of activating the disk sanitization option?

For a temporarly reason I extend a volume and LUN size to 180Go (original 100Go). In my Windows 2008R2 Server I extend the volume too.

When I finish my operation I wanted decrease the size to return in the original state.

In Windows, I reduce the volume to 100Go, in the disk manager it is ok. The partition doing 100Go and see 80Go of not allocated space.

In NetApp OnCommand System Manager the free space of the LUN stay at 25Go... why ??? Too, in my 100Go Windows partition I have 48Go free.

Finally I cannot reduce the lun size because System Manager see only 25Go of available space

We have windows forest with 3 sub-domain. For example:

company.com  (forest root domain)

a.company.com (sub domain)

b.company.com (sub domain)

c.company.com (sub domain)

All the user accounts and groups  are on the sub domains.

We have Linux systems and I have to configure ldap configuration on NetApp filer.

My configuration works very well with only one domain. NetApp filer cant search sub-domains.

"options ldap.ADdomain" is very critical. if empty, it cant find any user. if entered one domain, it can find only users on that domain. ldap.ADdomain accepts only one entry.

I have used ldap or Global catalog servers from all domains but I cant find correct configuration.

What is solution for sub-domain environment.

Today, connected via ssh user naroot BMC console I have reinstalled ontap with option 4a

(4)  Initialize owned disks (xx disks are owned by this filer).
(4a) Same as option 4, but create a flexible root volume.

Netapp is not connected to network so I gave some dummy IP addresses and when everything was completed I have finished my ssh session.

What I didn't pay attention to is that NetApp didn't ask me about any new (or old) root password, and I was sure that since I didn't change any settings, BMC naroot password will stay the same. Unforunately now I cannot login with my password. Is there any 'default' password in such cases used?

We are currently ensuring that our STIGs for all servers are in place and I have two areas that I cannot find a resolution for.  They are:

1.  The maximum number of concurrent sessions - Will need to know if there is a setting to set for a maximum number of users to access the NetApp filers at the same time.

2.  The ability for the system to lockout after 15 minutes if idleness. - Like the WIN10 OS, the system will lock after 15 minutes of idleness, is there a setting for the NetApp filers to also have this capability.

I have found the one's for the log-on banner and the one for three unsussessful log-on attempts, so I am good here.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

I occassionally use the awesome Windows tool here, but didn't want to have to fire up a Windows VM to use it or break out my spreadsheets, so I created this.  These two are not related and this is not a NetApp funded/official tool.  It is my own personal project I thought I'd share so others may be get some use out of it.

It is hosted on GitHub and GitHub Pages.  You can view the source code for the calculations and known issues.  When you first load the page, some inputs are there by default.  Just change what you need and the calculations will update automatically.

We have a system still on 8.1.4 which we have replaced the motherboard for (Process all followed) however when we try to do the giveback we get the below message:

Panic string: Failover Monitor: unable to transit - giveback process is hung (vfiler_low_level) in SK process cf_main on release 8.1.4P1

We have attempted the following:

vfiler run * cifs terminate

partner vfiler run * cifs terminate

This still resulted in filer panic when attempting to perform a giveback

cf giveback and cf giveback -f both resulted in panics.

It seems impossible to clear. At this moment I cannot think of any option other than too reboot the node or a last ditch effort of forcegiveback. The data is migrated off so no risk of data loss.

Has anyone come into this error before and does anyone have any suggestions to clear this other than drastic measures such as hard reboot and forcegiveback ?

Hi all - If someone could help with this question would be awesome.

Here's our setup.

• FAS3220 running 8.2.3p2 7-Mode
• We have Exchange 2010 running on a Windows 2012 (non-R2) virtual machine on ESXi 5.5
• The volumes are presented into the OS using LUNS via RDMs.
• The particular drive we're seeing an issue with is a 780GB thin provisioned LUN presenting a 800gb thick provisioned volume.  it stores Exchange logs which are deleted (~300gb worth) nightly. 
• We have enabled space_alloc on the LUNs to ensure when files (actually Exchange Logs) are deleted, we get the space back on the volume.
• We keep only one nightly snapshot of the volume, and then it goes to SnapVault. So only 1 snap exists on the volume outside backup hours.

The issue:

We're seeing very very slow (sometimes none at all) space reclaimation on the volume after the logs are purged. We see the space come back in Windows immediately. 

For example, on one log volumes right now we have 200GB of data visible in Windows.

On that 800GB NetApp volume, NetApp shows 125GB available, 470gb Data used, and 204GB of snaps = 674GB total.

The controllers on the NetApps aren't being smashed (sitting around 50% or lower).

Is this descrepency due to the space reclaim in the background being very slow? or could there be some other issue? Is there a way to see the progress of the reclaim or expedite the reclaim process?

Any help would be great.

I have fas2040 filer in 7-mode but need to test some API calls for cluster-mode filers and I am looking for ways to do that.

I have found out that it is possible to convert filer from 7-mode to cluster-mode but it seems that with my credentials I don't have authorization to access KB, where the flow is described.

If anyone could advice where to look for it or provide any documentation I would be very grateful.

But I have a few concerns here - is backward conversion (from cluster to 7-mode) possible or I will loose 7-mode forever?

Is there any other way to make some API calls to cluster-mode filer?

Do 7-mode CIFS Servers require WINS? We just switched to Server 2019 DCs which no longer support WINS, and the administrative CIFS Server on our aging 7-mode system no longer works. it will likely be gone in less than a year anyway but would like to administer it in the meantime. It discovers the DCs and picks one, shows up green in System Manager, and I can ping it, but can't browse with \\<name>.

Interesting problem on one HA Node.

The ‘storage show disk –p’ and ‘aggr status –r’ output shows ? for Shelf 3 drives on only 1 node in the 7-Mode HA Pair.

The other node shows normal.

The ‘sysconfig –a’ command shows everything normal on both nodes.

Somone told me using "statistics show -object nfs*".

I thought that command is only checking for nfs statistics.

Please let me know how do I check connected nfs clients.

How exactly do I run perfstat?

Do I need to ssh in to the filer?

What options should I be passing the command?

Thankfully, I discovered today that OnTAP 9.6 will not support the 7 Mode Transition Tool, according to the Release Notes. I say "thankfully" because I'm about to deploy our first OnTAP Select cluster in the next few days and was planning to put 9.6 on it, however I need to run the 7MTT to transition content from an old 2220 so I will now deploy 9.5P6. To any NetApp engineers who read this, I would like to request that the 7MTT be made compatible with 9.6. 7-mode is supported through spring of next year, and this is the time where we will be pushing to get our last handful of small offices with old 7-mode based 2220s onto a cdot based system. I'm sure we are not alone. Would love to hear anyone else's thoughts on this!

To enable "options nfs.vstorage.enable" for VAAI do we need any downtime or to follow any prerequisites.

Can we enable it on fly, will it impact any thing????

Hi All

Just a quick question about removing snapmirrored/vaulted volumes as I have had an issue in the past and just wanted to confirm the correct steps to be taken.

The previous issue I had was related to deleting a snapvault relationship after clearing an old relationship. This relationship sat on our destination filer and vaults from a snapmirror relationship which is also replicated to this filer. It had originally removed from view but reappeared. When trying to release the relationship I was getting a message saying "no releaseable destination found that matches those parameters".

We have 2 NetApp filers at 2 separate sites, snapmirror occurs on the volumes from Site A to Site B, on Site B we then use SnapVault to a separate volume for retention backups. We are using 7-mode 8.2.3P3 on both filers.

I normally follow the below steps when removing volumes. All of our volumes are fibre channels LUNs presented to VMware for serving datastores to our virtual machines.

1. Perform VMware tasks such as unmounting and deleting the datastores in the vSphere web client
2. Break snapmirror relationship for volume being decommissioned by doing a quiesce followed by a break, I normally do this from the source filer. Check relationship is removed from view in Production and DR filers using On command system manager.
3. On Source NetApp filer, go to LUNs, and offline the LUN in question, followed by deletion of LUN.
4. On source NetApp filer, go to volumes, offline the volume and then delete the volume.
5. On destination filer remove any schedules for the snapvault relationship to be removed.
6. On destination filer stop the related snapvault relationship, followed by release.
7. Once snapvault relationship deleted, remove snapvault source and destination volume once sufficient snaps have built up by offline LUN, delete LUN, offline volume and delete volume.

Any steps I have missed of any advice if there is a better way to do this would be much appreciated.

Currently running 8.1.2 7-Mode (FAS2240-4)

I'm sure I read the NetApp recommended version to upgrade to was 8.2.3P6, but now can't find that link !  

Checking the Software download page for FAS2240-4 I can only see 8.2.4 listed.  Is that all the confirmation I need ?  Sanity check more than anything 🙂
