Hi Bino, This use case is definitely supported with Edge-T - which can function as a SnapVault secondary. Only the minimal storage capacity makes Edge a poor target for backups. The documentation for doing this is the same that one would find for FAS. If you go to support.netapp.com, you should be able to search for "SnapVault express guide." -Jason

Ahmed, If you are talking about standalone a ESXi server which are not managed by vCenter, the Data ONTAP Edge Eval version will not install on these products - it requires a vCenter server. Only the full product is supported on the standalone ESXi server.

Philippe, The Data ONTAP Edge Eval version requires a vCenter server for deployment, so it won't work with the standalone hypervisor edition. The full Data ONTAP Edge product, however, can be installed on a standalone ESXi server using dvadmin. However, the free license (and Standard vCenter license) lacks the ability to connect to the VM console using dvadmin. Only Enterprise and Enterprise Plus licenses are supported for Data ONTAP Edge. The free edition may work, appear to work at first (with the lack of console support), but we can't say for sure it will run well. Good luck!

Troy, There is no upgrade path from Edge to Edge-T - these are different products managed by different software license keys. The Data ONTAP Edge datasheet provides a nice comparison of the two offerings: http://media.netapp.com/documents/ds-data-ontap-edge.pdf

Troy, The number of physical disk spindles will have a much greater impact on performance than virtual disk spindles. The perf difference between one and two (or more) VMDKs per LUN is negligible. I/Os are 4k. Thanks. -Jason

You can add storage by ... 1) Power off the VM 2) Using the vSphere client: create a new VMDK file and attach it to the same SCSI controller as the 50GB VMDK 3) Start the VM 4) Login to the Data ONTAP CLI 5) Run 'disk assign all' 6) Add the disk to an existing aggregate or create a new aggregate using the disk. (Note: since you are adding the disk after the initial setup, it will take sometime for Data ONTAP to zero the disk. This amount of time will vary based on the size of the VMDK file and speed of your storage.) Alternatively, you can add additional storage before powering the VM on for the first time. Simply elect not to start the VM after deployment and follow the instructions above. If you do this, the lengthy zeroing process can be avoided. Thanks, -Jason

Hi Steve, What Linux distro have you chosen? We support ... • openSUSE Linux version 11.1, 64-bit • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.6 or 6.0, 32-bit Installing dvadmin itself usually isn't the difficult step with regard to dependencies. The more difficult piece to install is the VMware SDK. Depending on the Linux distro you are using, I suggest following the exact steps that VMware lays out here: http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.perlsdk.install.doc_50%2Fcli_install.3.5.html After the SDK is installed, you can satisfy the dvadmin dependencies by installing the packages specified in the Data ONTAP Edge Install Guide. For SuSE, that involves running this command: sudo zypper install perl-TermReadLine-Gnu perl-MIME-Lite perl-TimeDate perl-URI perl-libwww-perl For RHEL, the install is less succinct: Use the following steps to install these modules on Red Hat: 1. The perl-URI and perl-libwww-perl packages are installed as part of RHEL. 2. The perl-TimeDate package can be installed using yum. 3. The remaining packages (perl-Term-ReadLine-Gnu, perl-Net-OpenSSH, perl-IO-Pty, and perl-MIME-Lite) must be installed from .rpm files - you can locate them using a web service such as rpmfind.net Please let us know if you have any specific questions.

The Data ONTAP Edge Evaluation (http://www.netapp.com/data-ontap-edge-eval) has a raw capacity limit of 2TB. This means that if you assign more than 2TB of storage to the VM, it will not boot. The usable amount of storage on the eval will be some amount less than 2TB. The Data ONTAP Edge product (http://support.netapp.com/NOW/cgi-bin/software/) is listed on the data sheet with 5TB of usable storage. There is a software enforced capacity limit which kicks in at 10TB of assigned storage to the VM.

Adam, Data ONTAP enforces a specific configuration for this model of Data ONTAP-v: two CPUs, 4GB of memory. Increasing memory or the number of vCPUS isn't possible.

Jason, As others have stated this is expected: Data ONTAP Edge requires two cores for operation. This is architectural requirement for Data ONTAP and reducing the resources available will lead to adverse behavior in WAFL. The reason VMware shows the CPUs at 100%, but sysstat shows something which is more accurate with regard to the current load on the system, is how VMware scheduling interprets the activity of the CPU. Data ONTAP does not perform the halt CPU instruction when idle and this makes the idle thread appear to be hot on a vCPU. This leads to VMware always reporting 100%. Our performance measurements found that performing the halt instruction when idle had a definite impact on total IOPS for various tests. Not performing halt when idle is the same behavior as on physical NetApp filers. It was unclear from your post if you are talking about the evaluation version of Data ONTAP Edge or the production version. The production version enforces a CPU and memory resource reservation for the virtual machine. This ensures that Data ONTAP Edge will always get two vCPUs and 4GB of memory. I hope this helps.

Hi Bryan, Hana is correct that dvadmin 1.0.1 and vSphere 5 have issues and that you should move to 1.1.0. However, you may be able to work around this issue in 1.0.1 by running this command before starting dvadmin: set PERL_LWP_SSL_VERIFY_HOSTNAME=0 In general, however, since dvadmin 1.1.0 is available and you are running vSphere 5, you should upgrade. Thanks, -Jason
