2. enable ndmp (and set ndmp user & password)

3. use a NDMP capable Backup Software to backup the data

You can get a simple setup working by following the instructions in the documentation here:

You don't really need backup software per se, if your setup is small and you want to script it yourself, but it won't be much fun to restore.  It will, however, allow you to see if the filer sees the tape drive and if things work on a fundamental level.

You haven't mentioned much about your physical setup, so it is a little difficult to comment on much more.
