netboot issue

Hello,

ontap upgrade issue, I was updating FAS2040HA from 7.3.2 to 8.0.3P2.

>software update -r for both filers,

A>cf takeover
A>cf giveback

(Now the B node is 8.0.3P2 and A node is still 7.3.2)

B>cf takeover -n
Doesen't work, because of cifs
>cifs terminate, no luck...
>halt -d, well, that worked...

but...
takeover didn't happened, and B node was trying to boot 7.3.2.
It didn't boot up, because "bad disk label"

I tried to boot_primary, boot_secondary and etc. from LOADER prompt, no luck, always 7.3.2.

I was able to do netboot, but i get this menu:

Please choose one of the following:

(1) Normal Boot.
(2) Boot without /etc/rc.
(3) Change password.
(4) Clean configuration and initialize all disks.
(5) Maintenance mode boot.
(6) Update flash from backup config.
(7) Install new software first.
(8) Reboot node.
Selection (1-8)?

At this point a normal boot will be prohibited.

first i just tried with option 2, it booted up as 8.0.3P2.
i tried to do >software update, it didn't work, >download, didn't work.
if i type >version, it shows me 8.0.3P2,
>version -b shows me nothing.

then i did cf takeover from B node, and services are up, but A node is still trying to boot up 7.3.2.

Should i choose (7) from that netboot menu, or what?

Where have you got this “halt -d” from? It should have been just the “halt”. Have you used Upgrade advisor to generate procedure? Also standard documentation does not tell you to use “halt -d” either.

Netboot is not supported in 8.x beyond special menu, so I am not really sure what you get using 2 at this stage.

The best is now to call support. It could be as simple as tweaking some environment variables but could require some more actions. Reinstalling CF may work but I am not sure whether it is the only missing step in upgrade.

goto the maintenance mode, select a unassigned nic, assign a IP which is in the same subnet of you laptop IP or use the cross-over cable.

Run the netboot cmd, run the software update command again and restart the filer. You should be good to go.

thank you,

Hi

Like i said, >halt didn't work and >cifs terminate either (Do you guys know any other way to break cifs sessions?)
There is open case to netapp, but no answer yet...

Yes, i was able to do netboot, but i was't sure which one to choose from the menu? Netboot article doesen't tell.

Well, I guess it (7) now,
I found this manual Replacing a CompactFlash card in a FAS2040 system runnin Data ONTAP 8.0 7-Mode....
There is a section, where netboot is done, i think i should just follow those steps, but because i'm having open case, i'll wait netapps answer first

May I ask you if NetApp Support has provided you with the counsel needed?

And if not, May I ask you for the the case number?

Thanks,

JP

Hi,

Still open case.
Netapp gave me step by step instructions, but for some reason, it didn't boot up after ontap install and ended up to loader promt again.

Both nodes up and running 8.0.3P2.
I just had to do, few reboots manually. I'm not sure why, but maybe because there was ontap update at the same time in this case.

Just in case, i issued >software update command again. No errors, everything ok.

Then i issued cf takeover, the other node says during boot: autoboot fail.... and then i'm at loader promt again.
from there i can boot filer up using example bye. (autoboot fails)

can you type "printenv" at the loader prompt and post the results?

use the netboot and reinstall the software, you should be fine.

If not, I think you need professional services support.

thank you,

Hi,

Thank you for your response.
I don't have an experience about content in >printenv
But i was thinkin to se the defaults, I just didn't had courage to do that on my own

Case will continue next week, so you have to wait
But i'll also wait netapps response for this, and their opinion about to use >set-defaults >bye commands.

Thank you!
