From the NetApp 10GbE FAQ [TR3863]. A little obscure but downloaded it from the Field Portal some time ago and remembered seeing it.

CAN THE 10GBE NICS AUTONEGOTIATE TO GBE SPEED?

Answer: Port speed negotiation to GbE speed is not supported.

Hi Scott,

Could you kindly share that TR (TR3863) in here? Becuase, I tried to download it from FiledPortal but it didn't come up with any link. May be they have removed. But I like to see what is in there as we already have some systems using X1107A cards.
