Hello, We have a NetApp FAS 2240-4 model, 7-mode system, double-controller in single chassis, with no external storage, running Data ONTAP 8.1.3 . NETAPP2240A is the main controller, and auto reboots continually, so data on the storage is unreachable. The second controller NETAPP2240B is the passive backup partner node, I expect it to takeover the main controller automatically but it does not. If I use “takeover” command on NETAPPB, is there a possibility that it causes data loss? The data on the storage system is needed and I don’t want to risk the data. I will appreciate if anyone with an experience on these old systems answers. Thank you for your attention. Ceren Yazgan

Hi, There are 12 disks on FAS2220, NetApp Release 8.2.5P5 7-Mode sysconfig is listing one of the disks as failed >00.5 : NETAPP X302_HJUPI01TSSM NA04 847.5GB 512B/sect (Failed) This disk is listed sysconfig -r as partner disk : partner 0b.00.5 0b 0 5 SA:B 0 BSAS 7200 0/0 847884/1736466816 Unfortunately i cannot unfail it. *>disk unfail -s 0b.00.5 *>disk unfail: Disk is not currently failed. > aggr status -s is showing no spares. Is there any way to unfail that disk ? I keep replacing disks on that device and no luck. Tried 3 different new disks from the stock. Could it be socket issue ? I cannot see any errors. Looks like new disks placed in the socket are not accepted. Cheers Marius

Hi, I have couple of dozen FAS2220 NetApp Release 8.2.5P5 7-Mode arrays. I have also a stock of brand new disks I use to replace failed disks. The disks are not sent by vendor as there is no support for those devices anymore but they are purchased from Netapp partner. Unfortunately quite frequently new disks are not accepted by the array. It's very random. Sometimes there is no issue at all and the other time after the replacement even size of the disk is not recognized. Sometimes i have to try 5 new disks untiull finally one of them will be added to the pool. How can I find the root cause ? If that would be one array i'd suspect hardware issue but if it happens on many separate arrays. slot 0: SAS Host Adapter 0a (PMC-Sierra PM8001 rev. I am configuring a 2720 with 9 DS212C shelves. It is populated with the 16TB HDD and six, SSDs. I would like to configure this for maximum write IOPS and fault tolerance. Please critique my plan. SSDs Physically I intend to place one SSD each on six of the shelves. In this way a single shelf failure or replacement will not take down the aggregate built on the SSDs. Logically I intend to partition the SSD and create two aggregates; one assigned to each node. HDDs I intend to partition the HDDs and organize the RAID as follows. Because I have 10 shelves(1Head+9DS212C), each with 12 bays I would create 11, 10-Drive RAID-DP groups with one member from each shelf. Because the HDDs are partitioned there would be 11 HDD RAID groups per HDD aggregate. The remaining four HDDs would be used for spares. Because the drives are partitioned, P1 would be assigned to node 1 and P2 would be assigned to node 2. The trade off of this configuration is that I will have more parity drives that if I had a larger RAID group. However my assumption is that a smaller RAID group will provide improved WRITE IOPS . In the end I will have four aggregates; two HDD based and two SSD based with one HDD and one SSD on each controller. Your suggestions and comments are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
