Ok, so, you may have seen a few posts here already that aim to dispel some myths about our BlueXP services. This is another one debunking interesting myths I’ve heard about governance and compliance tools, data classification tools, and BlueXP classification. But why are we even taking on such a myth busting project? To simply sell more BlueXP services? Um, not entirely. Frankly, myths can be harmful because they are misunderstandings that limit our thinking and can cause us to miss out on valuable opportunities and solutions that can actually help us! So, sit back, relax, and let's dive into the myths about BlueXP classification (powered by Cloud Data Sense) and why they're simply not true.
Myth #1: Governance and compliance tools aren’t of benefit to IT pros.
False! IT professionals have a vested interest in ensuring that their organizations comply with regulations and best practices. Failure to do so can lead to serious consequences, including fines, legal action, and damage to an organization's reputation.
Moreover, governance and compliance tools can help IT teams to manage their infrastructure and data more effectively, especially across complex heterogeneous hybrid multicloud environments. These tools give them visibility and insights into their data so they can better understand which data to protect, migrate, or delete for more effective IT operations. These tools can:
- Improve cost optimization: Enables them to find and tier/remove data ROT (redundant, obsolete, trivial data) from their storage resources to eliminate waste and save money.
- Strengthen security: Allows them to easily see what’s in their data (like personal and sensitive information), where it’s located, and who can access it. This helps them identify and reduce their threat surface, support zero-trust models, and better protect exposed data that may be at risk.
- Accelerate cloud migration: Helps them clean data before migrating it to the cloud or other storage.
- Maintain regulatory compliance: Enables them to automate compliance operations.
Myth #2: Only regulated industries need data classification tools.
Nope! Data classification tools are often associated with highly regulated industries such as finance and healthcare. While an org may not have specific regulatory obligations, it most likely does have internal business policies that it needs to adhere to, like data retention policies. Plus, all industries deal with sensitive data, and data classification tools can benefit any organization that handles confidential information. Data classification tools help organizations identify and label data based on its sensitivity, which enables better data protection.
For instance, imagine a marketing or sales team that handles customer data. By using data classification tools, the team can identify which data is sensitive, such as credit card information, and ensure it is protected. This helps to prevent data breaches and potential legal issues.
Myth #3: BlueXP classification provides value only in the cloud.
Really? No! This is a common misconception that can lead to missed opportunities for organizations.
BlueXP classification is a data classification tool that provides value beyond the cloud,
helping organizations classify data across ALL environments from a single pane of glass, including on-premises and/or hybrid multicloud, and across vendors and types - not only NetApp, but Pure, Nutanix, Dell, and the hyperscalers…file, object, SharePoint, OneDrive, and more.
For a company that stores data both in the cloud and on-premises, BlueXP classification can classify data consistently across all environments, making it easier to manage and protect.
Hopefully I’ve convinced you that these three myths are just that - untruths, and IT professionals should embrace governance and compliance tools, data classification tools, and BlueXP classification! These tools provide critical functionality that is necessary for securing data, optimizing IT, and ensuring compliance. By debunking these myths, we can continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in IT and provide better solutions for our customers.
