NetApp® technology has long set the standard for data protection, and with Google Cloud NetApp Volumes, this robust capability is now more accessible than ever in the cloud. With NetApp Volumes, you benefit from:

  • Local volume snapshots
  • Volume replication across Google Cloud regions
  • Volume backups that are stored in separate storage vaults

These features are essential for data durability and rapid recovery, no matter where your infrastructure resides.

Introducing cross-project replication

Cross-region volume replication is supported with all NetApp Volumes service levels, and for regular and large capacity volumes. As we continue to enhance replication with new features for migration and data protection, we have also added support for replication between two different Google Cloud projects. This feature is available with the Standard, Premium, and Extreme service levels.

Why it's important

Some customers segregate their production and disaster recovery (DR) resources, like VMs and storage, into different projects. They might do it to maintain strict isolation, to support enhanced security, or to implement their network design. No matter the reason for separate projects, you can now set up replication between storage pools in two different projects within the same organization.

Getting started

To begin using this new replication capability, start by contacting your sales team to have your projects enabled for cross-project support. You can then create the replication by using the Google Cloud CLI, the Google API, or Terraform and by specifying the full resource path to the destination storage pool. You need netapp.replications.create permissions in both projects. After you have created the replication, you can also use Cloud console to manage the cross-project replication. You can also use this process to move a volume between projects. You replicate the volume, then break the relationship.

Summary

This feature offers significant advantages if you’re overseeing complex environments, particularly if you’re handling multiple Google Cloud projects. You can streamline your DR strategies, strengthen isolation and security, and get greater flexibility for enterprise cloud architectures. Ultimately, NetApp’s history of dependable data protection empowers you to safeguard your business-critical data on Google Cloud, whatever your deployment model is.
