NetApp statement is that volume move is non-disruptive. If you are so concerned, open support request, although I am not sure how it helps if you are unlucky to be the first one to hit new bug ...

You may want to read http://community.netapp.com/t5/Data-ONTAP-Discussions/New-Cluster-Nodes-Not-Showing-in-NetApp-DSM-for-MPIO/td-p/123988 where amost exactly the same question was discussed rather extensively.

@wsanderstii wrote: I guess after working with netapps for 20+ years I still don't understand factional reserve. Perhaps no one does 🙂 LUN space management (including fractional reserve) is described pretty extensively in TR-3483. I am surpsised you never came around to reading it in 20+ years. If I am mistaken and you did - do you have specific question about content of this TR?

@TMADOCTHOMAS wrote: What would be the consequences of doing that? Data would flow across cluster interconnect, so likely increased latency. @TMADOCTHOMAS wrote: Also: I don't see a "remote-nodes" option. I am on 8.3.2 so I don't know if that's a new 9.0 option. It is listed in 8.3.2 documentation. I do not have live system to check. Try in advanced mode.

Fractional Reserve: 100% ... Set fractional reserve to 0, this should free reserved space. Please note, this may result in out of space condition during writes to LUN.

@bobshouseofcards wrote: How do you identify the old? Can't be by aggregate or volume location since the data isn't at the old location anymore. So the sequence, if you will remove reporting nodes, is "add new, remove local, move vol/lun". Actually easier is - move LUN, add new local paths using "lun mapping add-reporting-nodes -local-nodes true", remove old (now remote) paths using "lun mapping remove-reporting-nodes -remote-nodes true". This sequence does not require you to identify source or destination at all and can be applied to any LUN anytime.

LUN move is actually covered pretty well in documentation (see SAN Administration Guide, Modifying SLM reporting nodes). When you move LUN to new aggregate that is hosted on different nodes, you need to add these nodes to the set of reporting nodes. Using -destination-aggregate eliminates need to know these nodes' names directly - you usually know destination aggregate/volume already. As long as you have just 4 nodes in total, this is entirely equivalent to using "all". But it makes difference if you have large cluster. After move is complete you may remove old nodes using remove-reporting-node -remote-nodes.

As it is not possible to add "me too" to followup - yes, that is what I ask myself as well. In all the buzz about flash pool nowhere is defined what "overwrite" actually is.

You need to perform wipeconfig first, so filer "forgets" in which mode it was installed. This should be done while in old mode. See as example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMOEkO-5I9k&list=PLHSh2r3A9gQRo_kqWmv4Bz-iyg3l8LSmH&index=8.

This link contains example of installing new software directly on boot medium. It does not depend on 7-Mode vs. C-Mode. https://kb.netapp.com/support/s/article/how-to-netboot-clustered-data-ontap-8-1x-and-later You cannot install 8.3 using google link. This link explains how to reinitialize controller in C-Mode using already installed Data ONTAP version. You can then upgrade it of course from within Data ONTAP. P.S. sorry forgot link.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems like eventhough the FAS2552 is in 7-Mode, the firmware in the filer also has CDOT image in it and all you need to do is change "boot mode". That's correct. Except it is not "firmware" but "software". As you currently have 8.2 and want to go to 8.3, it makes sense to install 8.3 first (which is additional step KB article explicitly mentions) and then do initialization (boot menu option 4). It is simply faster than doing update later. Make sure to install the same version you have on existing cluster if you intend to join it. And of course you need to perform this procedure on both controllers independently. Note also that if you want to use Advanced Disk Partitioning (normally default wit 8.3 on FAS2500) you should remove ownership of all disks before starting initialization.

Binaries are the same, there is no separate download. Follow https://kb.netapp.com/support/s/article/services-partners-how-to-convert-a-data-ontap-8-x-7-mode-node-to-a-clustered-data-ontap-node to do conversion.

In-place upgrade from 7-Mode to C-Mode is not possible. Filer must be wiped out and cleanly reinstalled in C-Mode. If there is data to be preserved, it must be evacuated (migrated). 7MTT helps to automate this.

Well, google search for "vmfs space reclamation" brings up quite a lot of hits, including VMware KB articles. If you are concerned with "no risk" I suggest you open support VMware support call and ask them. On NetApp side you will need to disable space reservation for volume and LUN; otherwise space reclamation won't increase free space on aggregate. Also space reclamation won't free storage in snapshots.

My best guess is that this is deduplication effect. I.e. logically your files require about 9000GB on volume; but actual space consumption on aggregate level is reduced due to deduplication.
