Is the primary dedupe enabled ? If so you are hitting the know issue which is release noted. http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/oncommand/relcore50/html/software/rnote_oc_core5/frameset.html Dynamic volume resizing must be disabled to support deduplication plus "Mirror, then back up" protection policy Regards adai

If you change the filer IP you will have to set it using the following cli. dfm host set <filerid-or-name> hostPrimaryAddress=<new-ip-address> If you have changed the host name also use the following cli. dfm host rename <oldname> <new name> To check if connectivity from DFM server to filer is working fine use the dfm host diag < filer id> Regards adai

Hi Francesco, Let me try to answer some of your questions. What does this mean? If I've understood well when installing host package I will not have any netap plugin on vmware and the provision/protection policy will be managed directly from the OnCommand Core server. Is this right? Yes, you will have to use the OnCommand Console to do all that, and cant do it anymore from vSphere. Can/Should I install VSC if I want the other functionality of VSC (cloning/smvi/datastore mgt/etc)? AFAIK, yes you can as even earlier, co-existence of VSC and SMVI were supported. So you should be able to going by the same reasoning.Unless someone come back and says no. If I install Host Package 1.1 and VSC can I contiune to run backup through VSC ? With 1.0 it was not possible to use SMVI with host package if I remember well... Your reasoning is same as mine."co-existence of VSC and SMVI were supported in HP 1.0. So you should be able to going by the same reasoning" Regards adai

Hi Michael, how this will affect my existing VMware backups under 1.0, etc. I would appreciate it as well. Backup taken in 1.0 will be intact and you can continue. HP 1.1 was released mainly to support vsphere 5.0 Regards adai

The number you are talking about 1650 & 5800 volumes and qtrees respectively is for a DFM with all license enabled(ie Ops-Mgr, Perf Advisor,Prot Mgr and Prov Mgr) which is just 40 nodes. But the number is 10K and 50K volumes and qtrees for a just a DFM server doing only OM + PA with 250 node. If your difference between dfm volume list and dfm volume list -a is more than 3X and similarly for others, then its time you purge you data of those deleted instances from the DB. As anyways you wont be able to access them unless you guys uses the -a options in the cli. It makes perfect sense to run the db pruning. You should also thing about moving to OnCommand 5.0 which is a 65 bit architecture and takes advantage of the available compute and memory. Pls do open a NGS case and get your db cleaned and perf data too, after that you will definitely feel the difference. BTW do you have lot of snapmanagers in your environment ? If thats the case its the flexclone volumes/luns that is the cause for lot of these deleted instance. Regards adai

The historic/statefulness is available only in graphs, if you use the dfm graph cli and csv version you should be able to get this data. Infact you would be able to get even beyond 1y. As in dfm data is never purged, but the UI max only shows up to 1y.Where as using the start and endtime in the cli you can get to since the object was discovered until now. In OnCommand 5.0 the reporting is done using BIRT reporting tool, which is exposed in the Reports TAB. Its because of BIRT you have all this browser compatibility issue, and limited browser variety and version support if am not wrong. Regards adai

>Also, going to a snapshot based backup would elimiated having a separate backup directory, because it is all withing the same LUN, right? Yes, but in the install dir it would still remain, which you may decide to keep it or not. Use the dfm dataset setup cli to move or copy the stuff using the appropriate cli switch. Regards adai

Hi, I understand, that would be a good to have one, but some ppl also like to have a different retention than on the primary.AFAIK, there is not trick, but there is a cumbersome way of doing it. Once PM creates the snapshots, rename the same, as you would like and re-register the backup version. All has to be done using SDK. Regards adai

1) What needs to be on a LUN? All the documentation I have read unanimously says the database needs to be on a LUN, however, I have only read in one place (KB 3011237) that says both the database AND Performance Advisor data need to be in a LUN. This makes sense to me, for how else will you be able to include PA data in a snapshot? Yes, infact 3 things needs to be in a single LUN, db, and the script-plugin directory. 2) Assuming that both DFM database and PA data need to be on a Netapp LUN, this raises a second question: Can they be on separate LUNs or do they need to be on the same LUN? If they can be on separate LUNs, does Snapdrive then take consistency group snapshots? No, its on a single LUN. 3) The LUNs need to be RDM to the VM? I believe thisis the case, for how else will Snapdrive function. This fact is lacking in official documentation. It can also be a iscsi using software initiators, or even a RDM. 4) Are RDM LUNs in an OpsMgr/VM environment supported for Windows Snapdrive for snapshot backups? I have only read in these forums that is was for UNIX. I think so, if snapdrive supports that it should work in operations manger too. Regards adai

Some response to pete's ONTAP itself has an RBAC system but I believe it allows or restricts specific commands, but it's all or nothing. The user either has access to the "vol" command or not and once he does, he can run "vol size" on any volume. At least, that's my understanding but it's been a while since I've looked into it. You are absolutely right, no change yet. I'm not that familiar with what a vFiler admin can do and what they can't. I think they can resize volumes and create shares but I don't know if they can create new volumes. True, create snapshots, delete them, but cant create volumes. Regards adai

Hi Hadrian, By lower sample rate you mean ? decrease the sample rate values from default ? That would put more load on the controllers and dfm server. I dint get the second question. Regards adai

Hi Michael, Take a dfm db backup, re-image your server. Make sure you will retain the same FQDN,and IP address Restore the dfm db backup on the re-imaged server Every thing should work fine as all other information are stored in the database. Regards adai

Hi Hadrian, Below is the link, let me know if it doesn't work. http://communities.netapp.com/thread/15840 Question #2 - Any problem with retaining performance data for 2 years? For an Operations Manager instance monitoring 200 nodes? =) Retaining more PA history definitely slows down the retrieval time for the PA views, it also increases the dbbackup time as the PA data also needs to be backedup. Regards adai
