Backing up VMware objects

You must have installed and logged into the following software:

• OnCommand console

• OnCommand Plug-in for VMware : Where is this tab or feature to log in ?

• DataFabric Manager server

• vSphere Client

I have just installed Oncommand 5.0 and HP 1.0 and testing,  I have few issues cannot assign remote policy to the dataset.

This is what i did:

Dataset tab: create dataset and selected Dataset with VMware objects and then given the name for datset and then clicked on data and selcted the resources.

Clicked on local policy and selected create,  gave new policy name and then add and selected daily modified the time, retention in the backup options clicked on view and selected start remote backup after local backup.

Under the storage service including remote protection I see few options but nothing relvant like thin provisiong, reserved dataspace, space reserved.

From the dataset tab i clicked on backup now it works. How do i select remote back up for this virtual object?

Note: Upgraded toOncommand 5.0 from DFM 4.1and HP1.0 installed on the smae machine and pointed the host services to the vCenter  server.

Can someone please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,

Check the attached document. See the topic backing up VMware objects. One question, why are you not using HP 1.1?

AFAIK for remote backup to work, you need to attach a storage service. You could modify the storage service or create a custom storage service of your like in NMC.

Sorry Arun, when iright click on dataset and say attach it opens up the edit dataset window under that I have a section Storage service Including remote protection under the drop down i see only these options:

None, reserved dataspace for VFMS datastore and NFS,and few other options nothing related to back, back & mirror or backup mirror & mirror like how it si availiable in Protection manager policies.

Am i missing something here?

Hi Ravindhar,

We can associate a protection policy to a vmware dataset using Storage Service.  Instead of directly associating a protection policy to the dataset you need to do the below.

1. From NMC(NetApp Management Console), create a storage service and associate the appropriate protection policy(Say Backup then Mirror) and secondary Resource Pool(Ensure you created a resource pool with storage systems/aggregates where you would like to backup)

     Note: Storage Service tab is available under Policies -> Storage Service.

2. Note: No need to attach primary Resource Pool and provisioning policy for the same. Only attaching the secondary resource pool is enough.

3. Now the service will be listed under Edit dataset from Oncommand console(where you are seeing lot of services as mentioned above)

4.Select and attach the service into the vmware dataset. So the protection policy attached to the service will start applicable for the vmware dataset.

Hi,

To add to it, once the above steps are performed (the ones mentioned by kjag), conforming job starts on your dataset, you can check the relationship creation jobs in “Job” tab, It creates a remote relationship to the secondary and does a baseline transfer of the source data to the destination. If the relationship creation jobs go through fine your remote backups should start working.
