Documentation on OCUM custom scripting

I'm trying to find documentation on how custom scripts interact with OCUM.  I'm using the VApp versions 6.3 and 6.4RC1.  In general, all I'm trying to do is send an email from the script to customize an alert message.  If feel like this may be easier if I installed OCUM on a regular OS. Anyone have documentation on reference material for custom scripts?  Variables that can be used etc.
