HA for DFM 4.0 with vSphere HA?

IHAC who needs to have a highly available install of DFM to manage data protection in a managed-hosting environment.  They've read TR- 3767: High-Availability for DataFabric Manager Server. They're asking if it wouldn't be easier to just run DFM in a vSphere virtual machine with vSphere HA enabled. They would gain benefits similar to host-based clustering, but without requiring two hosts or clustering software licenses.  In addition, this would theoretically buy them VMotion and DRS capabilities.

Q1) Is there any reason vSphere HA wouldn't work as a viable HA solution for DFM 4.0?

Q2) Would NetApp support this configuration?  Would it even matter?  To the DFM server - and to NetApp - it would appear as a single-server install of DFM.

Hi Reide,

The info in the IMT says so, below is the link to same.

http://now.netapp.com/matrix/configuration/showDetailsPage.do?configVersionId=52509&activateNotesTab=true

I am also pasting the contents for you convenience.

“DataFabric Manager Server 4.0 and above supports VMware VMotion and VMware High Availability features for

- VMware Infrastructure 3 version 3.5

- VMware vSphere 4”

All rules of vMotion and VMware HA apply.

VMware HA and Vmotion are supported starting DFM 4.0.

Pls refer to the IMT.

Adai,

I don't see anywhere in the IMT to specify DFM 4.0.  Are you referring to ONTAPs compatibility with vSphere and its Host Features (HA, Vmotion, DRS)?

Also, if you do run DFM 4.0 in a virtual machine with HA & Vmotion, I assume that you would want the DFM database on the guest O/S local storage and not on an RDM LUN, correct?

Thanks.
