Making user quotas and current usage visible to home directory clients on Netapp

In our current Windows-server based environment our connected clients accessing their home directories can see the size of their individual quota and their current usage via a GUI or CLI.

We are implementing Netapp gateways to replace our Windows servers imminently...

Moving to Netapp is it the case that our users will not be able to see such information via their client machines in the same manner? If so is there any recommended workaround to provide this information?

Or indeed, what do others do as an alltogether different mechaism perhaps?

Steve,

When NetApp user quotas are applied the user will only see the space set as the hard limit. Once user quotas have been established the filer quota report command can report on all user quotas within the machine. If you are migrating from a existing machine you should ensure ownership is maintained on files to ensure users are charged for all the files they are storing.

Thanks for the reply. very useful Our concern is ensuring we can keep users informed of their individual quota usage as well as trending and reporting on quota usage centrally for administrative purposes.

At the moment whilst resident on our Windows servers users can check their own quota stats themselves at any time. It would be useful to have a means to continue to allow them to do this on the NAS.

I guess too a means of alerting as certain quota thresholds are reached too.

Steve,

On command can cover the basic reporting of quotas, alerting to you and the end users. There are a bunch of 3rd party products that extend the basic functionality using F-policy.
