Operations Manager 3.8 DeDupe Potential Space Savings

Hi:

With Ops Manager 3.8's Dedupe awareness are there any canned or custom reporting options available to allow a customer to estimate the potential space savings if they were to enable dedupe on a flexvol in an FCP environment?

The only space savings tools I'm aware of are the SSET tools that are run from a Windows or Linux host in a CIFS or NFS environment.  I would like to know if Operations Manager 3.8 will be able to perform this functionality for an FCP environment by looking at the storage system.  We have over 1,000 SAN hosts with different operating systems, so it would be a nightmare to try to run any host-based tools to estimate our space savings.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

We don't have the facility to estimate the potential space savings if dedupe were to be run on a volume in Ops Manager 3.8. We have this feature in our road map. Please get back to our product management for more on this.

But with Ops Manager 3.8 we are providing reports for dedupe space savings per volume basis/per aggregate basis and group level also.

We are providing a comprehensive graphical representation of space savings as an effect of dedupe run in the next release of Provisioning Manager which will go with DFM 3.8 release. We will encourage you to use the Provisioning Manager to see the effective dedupe space savings in details. Provisioning Manager will support on-demand dedupe run and scheduled dedupe run also.

Thanks

Tanmoy

So....this only tangentially relates....but there is some nice deduplication visibility in NetApp Systems Manager as well (tabs under the volume section after you select a volume).
