ONTAP Deploy VM removed

Hi all,

recently, we have installed Ontap Onselect solution. It was 2 node Onselect HA cluster in one location. We were discussing what should we do, if the Ontap Deploy VM were removed. To enable all functions and features (storage failover capability etc.), are we supposed to deploy a secondary Deploy VM and restore the two node cluster quorum?

Any explanation will be much appreciated!

Hi @Jerry2

Thanks for clarifying your question.

If you need recover a lost / deleted / failed Deploy VM, then I would suggest you review this link - https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap-select/task_cli_deploy_recover_two_node.html#restoring-a-deploy-utility-instance-using-a-configuration-backup

I would encourage you to ensure you are taking backups of your Deploy VM as it will make recovery quicker and easier. More info here, https://kb.netapp.com/Advice_and_Troubleshooting/Data_Storage_Software/ONTAP_Select/How_to_Backup_and_Restore_the_ONTAP_Select_Deploy_VM

Hope this helps answer your question.

Hi @Jerry2

So for 2-node ONTAP Select deployments, the placement of the Deploy VM is quite important as it's acting as a mediator and mediator configuration data on it. So ensuring it's backed up and can be recovered is important.

Check out Page 49 - 51 on this Technical White-paper I think should help answer your question - https://www.netapp.com/pdf.html?item=/media/10662-tr4517.pdf

There is also, https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap-select/reference_plan_dep_general.html

Hi @RossC,

thank you so much for your input! In the documentation given I found out this sentence -

"The ONTAP Select two-node cluster should be carefully monitored for EMS messages indicating that
storage failover is disabled. These messages indicate a loss of connectivity to the mediator service and
should be rectified immediatel
"

The question is how to rectify the system if Ontap Select Deploy VM is for some reason removed (It is 2 node Ontap Select HA cluster). As previously said, I would say, in order to reestablish the storage failover capability, there is necessary to deploy a secondary Ontap Deploy VM and restore the two node cluster quorum

Please correct me if I am wrong, otherwise I will mark this post as resolved.
