Our customer has a DELL MD3620f Dual Controller array.
He needs an expansion shelf.
I wonder if I can propose him NetApp E-series expansion shelf as an option.

Even though it would might work technically, I wouldn't suggest that route at all. That is inviting a whole lot of ugly in terms of support, code releases, drive firmware and that's what I can think of off the top of my head.
The ONTAP maximum file limits is lesser than the maximum possible number of files supported by ONTAP for a volume. This video explains the reason why ONTAP has this lower limit on the file count.
