7Mode NDMP restore to cDot ?

Hi there

I recently found out that if you have old NDMP backups form 7mode of especially LUNs, and you want to restore them on your new cDot system, you are out of luck, as the LUN is just restored as a file.. and thereby useless..

This was indeed also described in the manual for cDot, but of cause not in large capital letters 😉

Am I the only one having this problem?

Only way I can see to solve this issue is to either restore everything to a 7mode system, maybe into the same volume in different qtrees, and try to get dedupe working for me...  then migrate the volume to my cDot SnapVault target...  then manually delete a folder every month until nothing is left..

This is a very labor intensive procedure...

Another way would to just leave the 7mode controller and tape library, and do adhoc restores to 7mode, then migrate to cDot...

Have someone found a better solution to this problem?

Also if someone know anything about the future ontap releases 8.3 maybe, and the possibility of support for 7mode LUN restores working...

/Heino

Hey Just saw your Post ..

and I don't think your the only one struggling with this .. but this is a simple 8.2 limitation and from 8.3 Live is going to be much easier

See
on 8.2  https://library.netapp.com/ecm/ecm_download_file/ECMP136870  Page 57
a 7-Mode volume to a clustered Data ONTAP volume
Note: A 7-Mode LUN is restored as a regular file on a clustered Data ONTAP volume.

Which basicly means you need to restore to 7Mode and than Migrate to C-Dot
