Having the a-sis/de-dupe capability in the ontap simulator would be a good thing. This would allow for customers to see the de-dupe ratios on their data.

Is it not easier to just run a small script on the data and just count the identical blocks. This works on the live data (you don't need to copy the data to the simulator) without touching the data.
We have done this before we started with dedup, just to look if it make sense to do.

It would, if someone is just interested in de-dupe rates. However, having it run in a simulator would give a customer a real world feeling. Ability to use ASIS commands, run other complimentary ontap commands and see other snapXXX interoperability would definitely add a whole lot of value.

Goods news - dedupe will be supported in the 7.3 Data ONTAP simulator. I'll post a notice to this group when the simulator goes up on the NOW site.

The Data ONTAP simulator is available for 7.3. It is posted on the NOW site at : http://now.netapp.com/NOW/cgi-bin/simulator
It supports the DeDupe feature with this version.
