FAS2820 - ontap 9.13 - migrate data from FAS2220 ontap 8.1.4

Previously we had another box of FAS2750 running on 9.11.1 where we migrate older 7-mode data using snapmirror TDP. It was so good to have.

Now we have another new box FAS2820 - ontap 9.13. We need to migrate another old filer FAS2220 ontap 8.1.4 almost 80TBs of data to the new box. This filer has hundreds of millions of files from our engineering test log.
We notice snapmirror TDP is no longer supported. Is there any replacement for it?

XCP from Netapp, we have to setup new box on Linux and Windows and lot of other setup here and there. This is very troublesome and to migrate hundreds of millions of files is a big problem. We cannot afford long downtime. And we cannot place NFS export into read only as data is going to access read+write.

Any advised of better way to migrate the 80TBs from FAS2220 ontap 8.1.4 7 mode  to FAS2

Hi Steven,

Have you considered engaging NetApp Professional Services in your area to assist you with your migration? It's likely they will have swing kit and design a migration plan for you. Migrations using 3rd party tools in a high file count environment are very problematic. Consider engaging NetApp in your area

Yes, we did. The solution offered was

1. NetApp will loan us a unit with Ontap that support 7 Mode Transition. (loan is FOC)

2. Setup the temporary box

3. 1st, migrate the old box to the temporary box

4. Cut over with same IP address and hostname for CIFS
5. 2nd, migrate again to the new box.
5. We are also asking for professional service from NetApp partner to help us for the 2 times migration.

Hi Steven,

I think that sounds like a wise migration plan that could be completed with minimal disruption rather than attempting to use 3rd party migration tools in a high file count environment. Hope your migration goes well

SAP should have retained TDP there for many customers that still old box.
