How to Convert SVM-DR from DP to XDP

So last week was due to upgrade ONTAP from 9.11.1P10 to 9.15.1P12. Change in place, all pre reqs from our upgrade plan pretty much ironed out and we come to the time to hit the button - but before that I hit the Validate button just incase. And it throws a upgrade stopper at us. Around 130 volumes with snapmirrors were legacy and configured with DP only. So i've been through the NetApp documentation and deleted / re-created snapmirrors with the new XDP format.

I'm now left with Volumes that are protected with SVM-DR (About 50 volumes in total across 8-10 SVMs). I've been looking around on NetApp and come across this one -  How to convert existing SVM-DR relationship from DP to XDP - NetApp Knowledge Base

This seems relatively simple. Is this document correct and will get us to where i need to be where everything is XDP. Can this be done at any point with no disruption to clients? Any steps or guidance / things to be aware of would be fantastic. Once this is done i can get ONTAP upgraded.

hello:

This step is correct. SnapMirror will not automatically convert an existing DP type relationship to XDP. To convert this relationship, you need to break and delete the existing relationship, create a new XDP relationship and resynchronize this relationship. When planning the conversion, you should be aware that the background preparation and data warehouse stages of XDP SnapMirror relationships may take a long time. It is not uncommon for the SnapMirror relationship to report the status "Preparing" for a long period of time, which may temporarily prevent data transmission to the client.

Best regards.

Hi All, ive followed the steps on a couple of our SVMs. One thing ive noticed is the root name doesnt seem to be changing to XDP? - all volumes that it contains have converted fine.

For example

svm-01 - still showing as DP

 - volume123 - Converted to XDP successfully

 -volume234- Converted to XDP successfully

 -volume345- Converted to XDP successfully

Is this normal or should it be converting?

hello:

The last part of this article, "The only exceptions to conversion are as follows:", might help you

Thanks for your help. I have now finished converting our SVM-DR from DP to XDP - I've also done a cluster validation and we are now ready to upgrade. Fingers crossed it all goes well.
