Issue with SMB: No WINS server are responding. The filer will continue to try to register with Wins

Hello

After migrated our DCs from server 2012 to 2019 our NetApp don't work well with the CIFS shares.

Randomly we cannot access the share and not even ping the Netapp.

We're getting this errors :

"No WINS server are responding. The filer will continue to try to register with Wins"

"...netapp :logger.ldap.preflist.failed:error]: Unable to connect to any of the servers in 'options ldap.servers.preferred"

Altought i've set the 2 DCs that as the role WINS running.

Any tip about this?

thanks in advance

That's old.

Anyway, I checked, your Data ONTAP 8.2.4 7-mode is not compatible with Domain Controller OS '2019'. But, 8.2.5 is supported. Hence, the advise would be to upgrade it to 8.2.5P5 and reconfigure CIFS.

You can check the compatibility here:
https://imt.netapp.com/matrix

Please Note: For Data ONTAP 8.2.x, the last published release is 8.2.5P5.

Why WINS, I thought it's long obsolete. Please note, if the DNS server is unreachable or unresponsive it can result in a protocol outage for NAS clients.

How to validate and update Vserver DNS servers in ONTAP?

Also, check the secd logs, located in the /mroot/etc/mlog file.

Because it's a old Netapp (8.2.4P2 7 Mode) and I assumed requires WINS since it was configured that way.

You mean I can reconfigure cifs and disabled WINS?

thanks in advance

appreciated for your help.

I've disabled SMB on this NetApp. Since it's out of warranty it could be risky to update it.

thanks
