I cannot answer your questions, rather have one for you - what is the reason to migrate from Simpana to SnapProtect?

jcbettinelli
6,851 Views

It could be the price.

You are right, I don't have the details but most probably it's a price issue.

Advanced Configuration - NAS iDataAgent - that's where it specifes Snapmirror to tape.

And also TR-3920 mentions SMTape too:

The SnapProtect solution allows several ways for backup copies to be replicated to tape, including Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) dump, SMTape, and tape streaming through media agents.

I also noticed this in the Advanced NAS iDataAgent section of NetApps version of Books Online which threw me a bit:

NetApp - A maximum data size of 50-80G per subclient is recommended.

Surely this can't be right, a single shared qtree could easily be way above this, so I'm guessing its a typo? But how long do full / incremental backups generally take with indexing turned on, on your typical CIFS share? Another question to add to the previous post!

Hi Mitchel,

There is a way to do NAS backup to tape.... at least theoretically... perhaps you can give it a try. If you've successfully added a tape storage device connected to your filer to the CommCell, then you should be able to add that library as an NDMP based Library to any media agent that has network connectivity to the filer.

Under Library & Drive Configuration, select the target media agent, then click on "Start -> NDMP -> Add library". The dialog prompts for a NDMP server (which will be the filer - NDMP should be enable on the filer) and for device name, enter the output from "storage show mc" on your filer. You need to copy the output labeled "Media Changer". This should add the tape library to your media agent as an NDMP based tape library.

You should then be able to configure a NAS iDA for the filer, and configure a subclient to do snap backups. Next, create a storage policy for the filer. Create a new copy for tape backups. Under "properties -> data paths" for that copy, when you click "Add" you should now be able to see the tape library attached to the media agent. Select it and set it as default. I believe you should then be able to do a backup to tape... theoretically anyway

You could give that a shot and let us know if it works!

I have already added it as an NDMP tape library and linked that to a media agent already, so it shows under a normal media agent as a tape library, but I can't choose it as a data path as you mentioned.

So it does look like it won't work, to use a tape library it has to be directly seen as though its installed locally in device manager by a media agent? Is this what you mean aborzenkov?

Interestingly, I can create a storage policy, choose the ndmp tape library as the library and the netapp filers as the media agents and it shows up as a full storage policy with the filers stating that its the media agent :/, no idea how this would work if I tried kicking off a snapprotect job though, I'm guessing it won't work. I'll give it a go.

I'm pretty sure NetBackup can use a drive exclusively attached to a filer, and a few other backup vendors, so I think I've been assuming again...!

I have another question, can you change the source of an auxiliary copy?

Eg. Primary Snap --> Snapvault initially.

Could I then setup a primary snap to snapmirror then change the snapvault to use the snapmirror as the destination once the snapmirror has been fully seeded?

JDCARPENTER19

Is it possible to import standard volume snapmirror relationships configured via the destination /etc/snapmirror.conf into SnapProtect?  Re-initializing these relationships would be very painful.

Also, inside of SnapProtect is it possible to move an SnapMirror/AUX copy relationship from one Storage Policy to another?  Again looking to avoid re-initializing the relationships.  When I've attempted to configure a new Storage Policy and associate the subclient it will build a new SnapMirror relationship.

Got an issue with data aging not working properly on my SnapVault system.

I've setup an auxiliary copy with a retention of 7 days and extended retention of 90 days for weekly fulls. However, after a week, the daily SnapVault copies are still present and have not been aged. When I run the Data Retention Forecast and Compliance report, it shows that the snapshots have been aged, and when I click on the sub-client and list snaps, they don't appear there either. However, they have not been deleted from the storage. Any idea what the issue could be? I'd read somewhere about some DFM option that had to be set if snapshots are not aged but for the life of me, I can't seem to find that reference anymore!

Anyone know how to fix this?

Trying to follow the OSSV documentation, which seems like it hasn't had too much attention paid to it, its very difficult to follow and I think is lacking certain steps as I'm not getting anywhere, its making Protection manager look like a fisher price easy to use product!

I don't suppose anyone have any of their own notes they likely had to make to get this working they could share?

Any experience / pointers welcome!

Hello,

I'm trying to find documentation about the import tool, but I haven't find yet.

I have found information on the Post 119 in this thread.

https://communities.netapp.com/thread/15083?start=119&tstart=0

Could someone point me to the documentation?

Thank you,

Jean-Christophe

Just read that in-place upgrades of SnapProtect v9 to v10 are not supported? How does one upgrade?

l_mitchell
7,032 Views

Love it. It just says:

Upgrade from SnapProtect 9.0 to SnapProtect 10 Service Pack 2B is currently
not supported.

The capability will be available shortly.

So I guess wait......I'll let someone else upgrade theirs first and you can enlighten us as to how easy it is (and what breaks!)

Hi Brian,

Yes, I've upgraded successfully. From the logs you've posted, it looks like you're missing Java 7 on your Comcell server, but the installer hits an error when trying to install it. I suggest you download Java 7 and install manually, then retry the upgrade. I have both 32-bit and 64-bit Java 7 installed. Wasn't sure which one it needs, so I just installed them both.

Thanks for a quick reply Frank,

I actually manually downloaded the 64 bit version of Java 7 and installed,I also installed the 32 bit version today and still got the installed java is corrupt error,I will work on it later on this afternoon  and check where it's picking the version 6 from
