So, to replace this disk, is there a need to fail it? What is the difference between predictive failure, and failed disk?

In my understanding Data ONTAP every weekend by default run some analisys (disk scrubbing) on the disks and if it detects  something wrong it will mark the disk as prefailed, at the end if you have an active maintenace support contract NetApp will replace the disk without any problem with an output of a "sysconfig -a" command. If you have not an active support contract try to "unfail" (this is an advanced command) the disk first, sometimes that can help and then zero the disk.

Predic failure or failed disk it is basically the same.

It is sometimes possible to predict a disk failure based on a pattern of recovered errors that have occurred. In such cases, the disk reports a predictive failure.

the system initiates Rapid RAID Recovery to copy data from the failing disk to an available spare disk. When data is copied, the disk is marked as failed and placed in the pool of broken disks

So Predict  failure is nothing but the disk has been failed. You can directly go and replace that disk with new one 🙂
