ONTAP Hardware
ONTAP Hardware
I have a FAS3040 we plan to resurrect for a mirror target.
- Currently running 7.3.5.1P1 and needs to be on 8.1.2
- Purchased a new DS4243 shelf full with 3TB drives
- Cabled HA single SAS 4-port card single Head
Here is the issue we need to solve.....
When attempting to "Initialize owned disks" in order to lay down ontap I get the following error:
(1) Normal boot.
(2) Boot without /etc/rc.
(3) Change password.
(4) Initialize owned disks (3 disks are owned by this filer).
(4a) Same as option 4, but create a flexible root volume.
(5) Maintenance mode boot.
Selection (1-5)? Thu May 23 04:24:26 GMT [shelf.config.mpha:info]: All attached storage on the system is multi-pathed HA.
4a
The system has 3 disks assigned whereas it needs 3 to boot, will try to assign the required number.
Zero disks and install a new file system? y
This will erase all the data on the disks, are you sure? y
Zeroing disks takes about 0 minutes.
Thu May 23 04:28:43 GMT [coredump.spare.none:info]: No sparecore disk was found.
Unable to create root volume: Not enough disks
Any Ideas?
One possibility is that disks are too new for Data ONTAP version. Did you check minimum requirements? If you will go to 8.x anyway, I would install this version straight away.
The head has been in storage for the past year without any shelves. I am attempting to upgrade to 8.x after I get a base install and the system can boot off disk. I will check the compatibility matrix now and get back to you. Thanks for the fast response.
Minimum Data ONTAP version 7.3.2, 8.0, 8.1
We are running 7.3.5.1P1 so I think we are good here
When I select SATA drives in DS4243 for 7.3.5.1 in HWU I see only drives up to 2TB.
Can you shoot me the link to where you found that, thanks again

go for 5, maintenance mode, and see if "disk show -v" shows you an existing ownership maybe? And if it shows you disks at all. 😉
Thanks Thomas,
Here is my output:

So it does show you disks at it could assign 3 of these succesfuly, so hardware/cables etc. are fine. 4a should work fine, otherwise try a disk assign all in maintenance mode and try 4a again.
