ONTAP Hardware

In the case of disk fail , fas2750(Ontap9.x), how does it behave?

hello,

I’m planning to build fas2750(Ontap v9.xx).

It has raid-db configuration environment([data disk x9, parity x2, spare x1] x2 node ) .

Question 1:

If two disks fail on one node (= 1 raid group), will two spare disks be used?

Question 2:

The Ontap 8 manual states that if there are no spare disks and two disks fail, the node will be shut down within 24 hours (default) automatically.

Does Ontap9 behave in the same way?

Thanks

Question 1:

No. Disks are owned by the individual nodes. If you have assigned both spare disks to one Node then of course it will use it.

Question 2:
The Ontap 8 manual states that if there are no spare disks and two disks fail, the node will be shut down within 24 hours (default) automatically. Does Ontap9 behave in the same way?
Yes, Ontap 9 does behave the same way as mentioned here, under the section 'raid.timeout'. It still works in HA-pair.

Hi,adakatsu

Question 1:
If two disks fail on one node (= 1 raid group), will two spare disks be used?
No, the hot spare disk to which the current node belongs will be used, and the hot spare disks of different nodes will not be used unless the ownership of another hot spare disk is added to the current node, otherwise the other hot spare disk will not be used.

Question 2:
The Ontap 8 manual states that if there are no spare disks and two disks fail, the node will be shut down within 24 hours (default) automatically Does Ontap9 behave in the same way?
Yes, the behavior of ONTAP 9 is the same as the "raid. timeout" mentioned in ONTAP 8.
