Mixing IOM6 and IOM12 in the same stack

I have a FAS8200 HA system. One of the two stacks has only one DS224C (1.8TB * 24) disk shelf in the stack.

Can I add DS2246 (1.2TB *24) shelves to the DS224C in the same stack? I have the SAS cables for this connection.

If possible what is the likely impact?

Thanks.

Mixing of IOM6 and IOM12 on the same stack is not supported. You would need to replace IOM6 with IOM12 in DS2246 (that is supported) or better connect in separate stack.

Many thanks for the information.

Do you also have an idea of the impact of physically moving a shelf from one stack to another?

Hello ,

FYI,  from beginning ONTAP version 9.7 P4, a new functionality to support a single speed transition from 6Gb to 12Gb in a SAS storage stack. This enables storage expansion of existing 6Gb stacks with 12Gb shelves.

If you read the ONTAP 9 release notes and changes in ONTAP 9.7 (Hardware support updates).
