Introducing the Preview for NetApp BlueXP backup and recovery for Microsoft SQL Server, VMware, and Kubernetes
The latest enhancement to BlueXP backup and recovery includes native support for Microsoft SQL Server, VMware, and Kubernetes backups. Previously, NetApp offered application-consistent backups and VMware backups via SnapCenter, and Kubernetes backups via Trident. This new version simplifies the backup process by integrating these workloads directly into BlueXP Backup and Recovery.
Key Highlights of BlueXP backup and recovery Preview
Seamless Integration: The new service allows direct backup of applications through BlueXP backup and recovery, making the entire process more user-friendly and efficient. Comprehensive Data Protection: BlueXP supports a full 3-2-1 data protection strategy: three copies of data, on two different media types, with one copy stored off-site. Now this includes MSSQL, VMs, and Kubernetes—all managed from a single control plane.
Optimized Performance and Cost Efficiency: By utilizing cloud storage options like AWS S3 and Azure Blob alongside on-premises solutions like StorageGRID, users can choose the most cost-effective and efficient storage options for their backup needs.
SQL Server, VMware, and Kubernetes Backup Support: The service offers robust features for managing backup policies for all these workloads, ensuring comprehensive 3-2-1 protection with backups to both cloud and on-premises object storage from an easy-to-use SaaS-based service.

BlueXP backup and recovery: Simple, Secure, and Cost-Effective Data Protection
Getting Started: Easy as 1-2-3
- Discover Workloads: Automatically detect and list all databases, VMs, and Kubernetes clusters, making it easy to select the ones to back up.
- Create Backup Policies: Customize backup policies to suit specific needs, defining schedule, storage, and retention periods.
- Protect Workloads: Apply the backup policies to the selected workloads and let BlueXP backup and recovery handle the rest, performing backups as scheduled.
Features of the New BlueXP backup and recovery
Simplicity and Integration:
- The new BlueXP backup and recovery service allows you to back up all your workloads directly through a single service. This integration simplifies the backup process, making it more accessible and efficient for users.
Comprehensive Data Protection:
- With BlueXP backup and recovery, you can easily define a complete 3-2-1 data protection strategy. The service supports primary, secondary, and object store backups for databases, VMs, and Kubernetes, all from a unified control plane.
Performance and Cost Efficiency:
- The new service is designed to optimize performance while reducing costs. By leveraging cloud storage options like AWS S3 and Azure Blob, as well as on-premises solutions like StorageGRID, you can choose the most cost-effective and efficient storage options for your backup needs.
SQL Server Backup Support:
- One of the standout features of the preview release is the support for Microsoft SQL Server backups. The service is designed to help customers define, manage, and execute their SQL backup policies, ensuring complete 3-2-1 protection with backups to object storage both in the cloud and on-premises.
SnapCenter Users Now Have a Backup as a Service Option:
- For SnapCenter users who have been requesting backup as a service, the new BlueXP backup and recovery provides that option. This eliminates the need to manage and support SnapCenter software, streamlining the backup process and reducing administrative overhead.
VMware Support:
- Now you can back up and restore from a multi-vCenter deployment using a single control plane. Migration is simplified by importing resource groups directly from the SnapCenter plugin for VMware. Through the integration into BlueXP Backup and Recovery, VMware users get tamper-proof copies of virtual machine data and crash-consistent and VM-consistent backups.
Kubernetes Support:
- This new version of BlueXP backup and recovery builds on top of the data protection features provided by Trident. These include features like multi-cluster support using a simple SaaS-based user interface, multiple backup architecture support, storage offload for data movement operations, and many more. Now Kubernetes users can back up and restore entire applications and individual resources to any Kubernetes cluster. This includes simplified cluster discovery without sharing kubeconfig files as well as support for Red Hat OpenShift and open-source Kubernetes.
