Can volumes etc be added to a vfiler once the vfiler is up and running in production – On P37 of the DOT 7.3 Mutistore Mgmt Guide it states “When resources are being moved, all network connections to the vFiler units are terminated” – This is a worry as I cannot disrupt service if I want to add extra storage etc?????

As in my previous post, as I need separation using ipspaces I can only have on vlan per vfiler and this would prevent me from being able to use a separate vlan for snapmirror replication. This leaves me with having to allow all IPs (vif + aliases) through an ACL for snapmirror - Can anyone confirm if I am right or wrong?

The vfilers will host data that should be securely partitioned and each vfiler will require an ipspace - Also, each vfiler will replicate data through separate network infrastructure and WAN links (once it has routed off the storage infrastructure). With this is mind I can only have one subnet / VLAN (ipspace) so can't separate my replication traffic to a VLAN with a single IP??? Can I?

So the replication traffic will not have a src IP of the VIF?! The solution you gave will be very confusing to implement as we will also be using mutistore - One VIF (4 x 1Gb links) will have multiple vlans (one per customer / vfiler) and each vlan will have an IP and 3 aliases (for IP load balancing). Are there any other ways we can make sure replication comes from only 1 designated IP?

I have another question please: I want to ensure that snapmirror replication traffic for each vfiler uses the default gateway for the ipspace in which the vfiler resides – I do not want all customer (vfilers) volume replication to go via the default gateway of vfiler0. Is this possible?

Thanks again for all this great info. A few other questions if I can: 1 - So all vfiler config is done via the CLI? – What about the VSC 2.0, does this work with vFilers? Can storage etc be monitored from any GUI tools? 2 – Can a volume from within a vfiler be replicated via snapmirror to a none mutistore system? 3 - Why create two VIFs and bind them together rather than one VIF with four physical interfaces and four IP addresses to allow ip hash load balancing? 4 - Can you point me at some decent documentation / training material? All I can find ONTAP 7.3 Stroage Managment Guide

Great, thanks. Does this mean you can also have multiple IPs per vFiler for iSCSI / NFS load balancing? Also, in your experience are there any drawbacks or things to be aware of when using multistore? Multiple customers will be hosted on the system running multistore, each in an iSCSI SAN environment, using VMware SRM and Snapmirror replicating to a system which does not utilise mulistore. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated as I am a little worried that the introduction of multistore may cause some issues, by that time it may be too late!

Is it possible to aggregate all Ethernet interfaces on a controller into a static multimode VIF and have this VIF be partitioned across multiple vFilers? I thought I read somewhere that you could only assign physical interfaces to vFilers? – I want all vFilers to be able to utilise the entire aggregate bandwidth of a VIF which includes 4 Ethernet interfaces, I do not want to limit each vFiler to one Ethernet interface.

If I have a VIF plus an additional 3 alias addresses what IP address will be the source of snapmirror replication? This is so I can implement ACL on the network.

Great, thanks for your help. Lastly, when you buy and install the hardware are the flexscale options available for configuration immediately?

I thought Flexscale was needed to tune / enable PAM, however I am being told that Flexscale is legacy and I need Flashcache with PAM II?
Pls could someone explain the difference between these components?
Also, do the license options (flexscale or flashcache) come with the hardware or do they need to be purchased in addition to the card?

I hear many people say NAS if best for VMware / VMware View environments vs SAN - Please could someone explain why this is and maybe point me to some discussions / documentation?

Is there any benefit in using Flexclone in a VMware View SAN environment? – The NetApp and VMware View Solution guide makes reference to file Flexclone, which is NAS right?? On another note, what is the benefit of using Flexclone vs mounting a snapshot for creating clones of your environment for test etc? And ihs this the same for NAS and SAN?

I have a static etherchannel VIF with 3 additional IP addresses – Within the ESX 4.1 SW isCSI initiator should all the IP addresses be included on the dynamic discovery tab or just the VIF address. I am fairly sure it will be all addresses to benefit from load balancing all links.

During setup I only configured one interface which I can connect to via system manager - I am now creating a VIF (same subnet) with system manager - When I try and accesss the system on this new VIF with system manager I receive an snmp error - I can ping the VIF. Does snmp / mgmt need to be enabled on additonal interfaces? Or am I missing something else?
