BMC can send limited notifications, but it is not replacement for full autosupport. If your filer is totally isolated, there is no workaround. Do you have any chance to setup e-mail forwarding (SMTP) on host connected to both networks? As you are using VMware anyway, may be setup restricted VM that does nothing else? There are router dstros that fit on floppy …

And you are sure passwords are kept in LDAP and not in local files? Do you see passwords when dumping LDAP content? Does LDAP attribute where passwords are stored match what is defined on NetApp?

Let’s be honest – the problem you have is in no way specific to NetApp and will happen on every other system I have worked with. There is no system that would by default ignore routing table for random destinations. If you have requirement that specific networks must be reached via specific gateway you have to tell system about it. There is no workaround. Really.

With fastpath enabled, any user traffic that comes in the data interface will go back out that interface and not use routing I remember KB (do not have number handy) which says that fastpath applies to NFS traffic only. Unfortunately there is very little information which explains how fastpath really works.

In other words, if your number of available spares[aggr status -s|vol status -s] go below the number of required spares then you will have your system running in degraded mode until you meet you the stated requirements. If you are unable to satisfy those requirements before the time limit has passed, the system will auto-shutdown to prevent any potential data loss. Sorry, but this is incorrect. Degraded mode means - raid group without protection (i.e. single disk missing in RAID4 or two disks missing in RAID_DP). Number of spare disks does not contribute to degraded status, and system will not shutdown if number of spares is low.

he's telling me I can't have a single file share with permissions for both CIFS and NFS set to it at the same time. Is this true? Yes, that's true. A file on NetApp always has single set of permissions - either CIFS or NFS. The way to share files on NetApp between CIFS and NFS is to map between NFS and CIFS users. Or to map all NFS users to a single CIFS user and give this user (read) permissions. Please read TR-3490 which decribes in details multiprotocol access issues. What do I need to request my admin to do, that will allow the CIFS permission to stay as they are but addtionally let the BOBJ application which is hosted on a Unix/AIX server to dump some report files to that same share? I assume BOBJ applications run as dedicated user. So you can map this user to specific CIFS (Windows) user and give this Windows user specific permissions to this share. If this is one off task, you could add BOBJ UNIX user to /etc/passwd on filer.

FAS2000 series are integrated (controller with + disks in one enclosure). Other models need extra disk enclosure. What exactly you get depends on what you order – it is up to you ☺ There is so called v-Series which allows you to connect third-party storage systems as backend storage. But if you need native disks, then yes, you have to use those from NetApp.

It will be by growing over 16tb.. Not in place. If I read documentation correctly - it will be when going over 16TB and in place Who needs 64 bit when not exceeding 16TB anyway? Espicially with possibility to replicate between 32 and 64 bit? I would love if someone shared real life conversion experience. I have customer waiting for it for months, but they do have production databases close to 25TB in total. It would be lengthy and costly attempt to restore from backup ...

By default when snapshot is created on volume with LUN Data ONTAP reserves amount of space that is “frozen” in snapshot on volume to ensure LUN still has space to write into it. Please read TR-3483 which explains all this in great details. In general - Snap reserve is meaningless on volumes containing LUN and simply reduce useable space - Automatic (filer initiated) snapshots of volumes with LUNs will often result in inconsistent data on LUNs; the effect varies from hard to recover up to impossible to recover data from snapshot. Usually snapshots are initiated from host in coordination with applications on LUNs. You have automatic snapshots turned on.

Do you have any snapshots on this volume? "snap list myvol"? Do you happen to know how VMware initializes datastore? I.e. - would it touch every block in a LUN during format?

There is unfortunaly no other option that read the snapmirror log file Well ... there still exists SNMP and API to pull data from filer. Actually, API is pobably the only way to monitor current transfer progress, because log is written only after transfer is completed (basically, it corresponds to "last transfer" in snapmirror status) and SNMP does not seem to provide "progress" value.

System comes from factory preinstalled with all licenses ordered for this system so you can see them using “license” command (or in FilerView/System Manager – do not ask me where ☺ ) Or go to http://now.netapp.com/eservice/agree.do?moduleName=PROTOCOL to see all licenses registered (a.k.a. – ordered) for your FAS based on serial number.

Convert netmask and IP address to base 2 representation. Part of IP address that corresponds to 1s in mask is network. Part of IP address that corresponds to 0s in mask is host. Host cannot be all 0 or all 1. It is highly unusual to have non-contiguous network part in address (if it is officially supported at all), so netmask is often written simply as number of bits in the beginning, like network 192.168.1.0/24 meaning netmask 255.255.255.0 (24 bits of 1s).

In general – for older models (before 3200/6200) iSCSI license was zero cost but still had to be explicitly ordered. NFS was extra charged. For current models you can select one free protocol license as part of fundamentals package, which means either iSCSI or NFS. There were (and are) also various bundles which include several licenses.

Cluster failover won’t work. The minimum technically possible number of disks on passive system – 2 (you will get permanent warning status due to spares low). Arguably 3 in RAID_DP offers better resiliency than 2 in RAID4 + spare (and you can turn off spares low warning in this case). This question comes up pretty often. Just do a search ☺
