Yes, NetApp supports failover on loss of connectivity. Check documentation for “negotiated failover”. To avoid misunderstanding - it is not failover of interface. It is failover of complete controller - i.e. one controller is shut down and all services are migrated to partner.

Each NetApp controller is independent and has own connectivity. So variant 1 will give high available connection for each controller. And yes, to ensure addresses are taken over by partner during controller failure you need to set partner interface.

I have FAS2240 which needs to be reverted to 8.1 after briefly running 8.2. Is SP/BIOS downgrade really necessary? I tried to downgrade SP to 2.1.3, but got rather funny results: SP sapdr> sp update http://172.17.0.200/FAS2200/306-02471_A0_SP_2.1.3_SP_FW.tar.gz -f Downloading package... Uncompressing package... 1. Snapshot is simply CP that was not removed. So when snapshot is created, additional CP is triggered. From now on it is not different from regular write path. 2,3. Snapshots are crash consistent. Some applications can do better and create application consistent snapshots. That's what various snap managers do. 4. Because it was implemented this way?

volume snapshot restore-file –vserver <vserver name> -volume <volume name> -snapshot <snapshot name> -path <path to file*> -restore-path <restore path**> Did not work because the volume was RO even if the restore path was a RW volume. snap restore to different volume is not possible by definition, RO or not RO.

I am not aware of any way to manually designate primary path. For SAS shelves primary path was always selected on whole shelf basis, but different shelves in a stack normally are balanced between two adapters. I think I have seen different output, but it could have been in maintenance mode. I just briefly checked and all systems I have access to have whole shelf assigned to one primary path. System with 6 shelves in stack has them balanced between two adapters (3+3). That’s different from FC shelves where primary path was selected per disk.
