I'm overhauling our strategy but SMVI, due to storage concerns, only holds snaps for last couple of days. This data includes OS and files.

I have several questions I hope I can get answered here. I have both SMVI 2.0 and BE 2010 running in my environment and am wondering if it is okay that they both run, at different times of course, on virtual machines in my infrastructure. Specifcally I am thinking about the VMware tools driver and the BE agent which installs its own driver. I have been told by Symantec to remove the sync driver/vss provider and install the BE agent instead so my BE jobs will run succsesfully. Will this mess up my SMVI backups? Next, if an SMVI backup fails will the retention portion of the job kick off, removing any backups outside that retention, could it effectively eave you with no backups? And finally, I have consolidated all VMs into one job in SMVI. Is there a limit to the number of datastores you can backup simultaneously in SMVI? Thank you for any help.

I attempted to reinstall SD and now I cannot see the luns in SnapDrive at all. I can, however, get to the drives in explorer so everything is working but SD. In troubleshooting why I cannot see the LUNs at all anymore the event viewer shows the following: Event Type: Warning Event Source: SnapDrive Event Category: Generic event Event ID: 317 Date: 8/20/2010 Time: 4:53:34 AM User: N/A Computer: VMMAIL2 Description: Failed to enumerate LUN. It seems to me that SD cannot see the manually created igroup on the filer. I removed the other SD created igroups which is probably why I can't see the LUNs anymore.

Manually attempting to connect results in attached. Not much help there. I did select all igroups, however so that doesn't seem to be the issue.

I have two exchange servers 2003 both with Snapdrive 6.1 and SME 5.0. Storage is NetApp FAS 2020 on DS14MK4 Shelves running on FC. Exchange Database and Logs are on two physical RDMs. Oddly enough one of the exchange servers works just fine. Something seems odd in the igroups though - I've attached a screen shot. The VMware HP igroup was manually created but the via RPC ones are created automatically by Snapdrive. VMMAIL2 does not seem to have an igroup to f8:8f. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. Thanks,

I am trying to use the dump command but to a path instead of a device. Is this possible? From Linux guest I am trying to do the following: debian:/# ssh 192.168.10.10 "dump 0ufbB /mnt/backupserv 63 2097151 /vol/recorder/.snapshot/hourly.0" Where /vol/recorder/.snapshot/hourly.0 is the snapshot I want to dump. /mnt/backupserv is the mounted drive where I want to dump to. Is there a better way to do this? I just want to dump a snapshot to a windows drive. Maybe a copy command from filer to windows share? NDMPCOPY - found it. nevermind! Thanks

Originally the issue was "A general system error occured: Protocol error from VMX" after reinstalling VMware Tools the error was "Cannot create a quiesced snapshot operation exceeded the time limit for holding off I/O in the frozen virtual machine." This required VMware support as attempting to create a snapshot to quiesce the OS was failing from Virtual Center. Solution was reinstall VMware tools and this KB http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1019848 To manually register the VMware Snapshot Provider: Click Start > Run, type cmd, and click OK. Enter the following commands in sequence: regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\Drivers\vss\VCBRequestor.dll" regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\Drivers\vss\VCBSnapshotProvider.dll" "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\COMREG.EXE" -register "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\Drivers\vss\VCBSnapshotProvider.dll" "VMware Snapshot Provider" "vmvss" "VMware Snapshot Provider" If, when registering the COM application, you see the error error 80110801 when attempting to register the COM application, you must delete the VMware Snapshot Provider COM application. Hope this helps. SMVI ran the job successfully after that.

I am entertaining the idea of a software iSCSI connection for the Exchange server database/logs. I think we can afford the CPU overhead. My concern is available interfaces. The low priority servers will reside on Vmware via NFS. If I set up the Exchange Server on software iscsi will this be able to run side by side with NFS? Will I need anything else to use RDMs with the Exchange server (like Snapdrive ?

Yes, sorry I didn't make it clear. It will be a virtual exchange 2003 server on NFS storage. It is also for a small office deployment and its load will be relatively light. A far cry from this technical paper. This paper is aimed around an enormous deployment as well as using Exchange 2007. I think it is safe to put on NFS and I will determine the volume separation based on the backup strategy.

Just finished first NFS deployment and am wondering how to lay out our Exchange server. With our Exchange deployment on FC we made 3 separate volumes: mail (for OS +Queues), mail_sg1 (database), and mail_logs (logs). Our exchange on the FC environment is backed up via Snapmanager for Exchange and I believe they require separation of volumes as such. We do not have SME for the NFS environment and I am not sure what we are going to use just yet. We will be using Snapmirror to replicate the volumes and one caveat I noticed with the information store and logs being on different volumes is on the destination end of Snapmirror when attempting to restore the logs and DB will be out of synch. For example an information store from 12:00 and logs from 12:05 which I still haven't found a solution to. Anyone have thoughts as to how they laid out their Exchange on NFS? Should I bother separating the volumes or just keep them all together? Also would appreciate feedback for Snapmirror issue as well. thanks,

As stated above we are using FC and I have never configured NPIV for the few RDMs we have so I don't think that's it either. Thanks for the shot though. Today none of the SMVI jobs failed.

I have scheduled the SMVI jobs so that they do not overlap. Although I don't think that should be an issue as the backup process should be under a minute. There really doesn't seem to be any similar traits of the jobs that are failing. Some of these servers that are backed up are front-end and bear no processor or memory strain so they shouldn't be "busy." All the backup options are the same other than the schedule time. We aren't using scripts or anything special. I noticed that the server which failed starts and stops a service every minute. So perhaps this is why a VMware snapshot could never be successfully taken? The only problem with the cause being on the client is that the backup succeeds all other times. For instance, tomorrow this backup will not fail. So it occurs sporadically as I stated before.

As a side note, does SMVI create a snapshot of VM memory and does it quiesce the guest file system? Two of these are options for vmware snapshots and SMVI does not mention the options it uses. Thanks for any insight.

How is everyone managing more than one controller? Logging into 3+ controllers is a bit inefficient. It is also confusing as it makes it appear that one controller "owns" a shelf when if clustered both controllers have access. For example, I log onto toaster1 and see a list of volumes. I then log onto toaster2 (second controller) and it has a different set of volumes. Both toasters are connected to the same shelves - shouldn't they see all volumes via Filerview? Thanks,

This is still happening. If SMVI gets interrupted before it cleans up the snapshot it just leaves it there. Over time it will layer the snapshots and If I am not checking the servers for snapshots every week I risk running out of room on the partition. This product as well as SME are causing more pain than they are helping alleviate with their functionality.

All versions are fine - it's a synchronization issue that is caused by required storage layout. Two physical RDMs snapmirrored to remote site: one is exchange db, one is exchange logs.Currently I have them on a 24 hour cycle. Viewing the Snapmirror shows database on 15:24:46 lag with logs on 15:44:43. There is a discrepancy of 20 minutes. If I break mirror and attempt to bring up this exchange server it will fail obviously as logs will be more recent than DB. So either there needs to be some way of ensuring the logs and DB lag will remain in sync or a way of repairing the remote side when attempting to mount the Databases. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

For SnapManager for Exchange to work it needs the exchange database and logs on separate physical RDMs. This results in them being housed on different volumes and therefore being victim to different lags on Snapmirror. I have attempted to restore the database and logs on the snapmirror destination side and encountered errors mounting the information store due to the time difference of the logs and the exchange database. How can I get around this to make sure the logs and DB are timed correctly to avoid potential issues in bringing up the other side?
