How to migrate a dataset to another resource pool on the same filer ?

Hi,

This is the first time that I try migration feature of UM.

UM 5.1

DOT 8.1.1 P1 7 mode

The problem is pretty simple.

Initial status:

  • The dataset dsA has one volume volA
  • The dataset has only local backup protection policy
  • The dataset has provisioning policy on resource pool rpA
  • The resource pool contains only two aggregates aggrA & aggrB (no vfiler, no physical storage) from physical storage nasA
  • The vFiler vfilerA on nasA owns the volume volA with all its Qtrees and Cifs shares
  • The aggregate aggrA hosts volA

We want to move the dataset dsA with all its components to another resource pool rpB:

  • the target resource pool rpB contains aggregate aggrC from the same physical storage psA
  • the volA and all its attached Qtrees and Cifs shares must remain attached to the same vfiler vfilerA

The Start migration wizard displays error "Dataset Migration.Storage system is mandatory" when I select the target resource pool.

As mentioned previously we use only aggregates in resource pools.

I do not understand what is missing to make the migration as there is no change on hosting physical storage and no change on hosting vFiler too.

May be I'm complicating the problem ?

May be vol move or similar should solve the problem ? In such case is there side effects on UM ?

Any idea ?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi Alain,

Let me see if I understood your intentions. You are basically trying to move the existing volume in qtrees that belong to a vfiler from one aggr to another aggr of the same physical filer.

Is it correct ? If so there is no easy way other than doing a snapmirror between the 2 aggr.

vFiler migration of primary works across filers and not with a filer.

Secondary volume migration will work but for that you will have to make sure there are no client facing protocols for the volume enabled like CIFS shares or NFS exports.

Hi Adai,

You understood the problem.

Therefore I'll use snapmirror.

Many thanks for your help
