Problem installing oncommand host package 1.1

Hi I've a vcenter server 5 installed on a 2008 64 machine with also vsc 2.1.1 installed.

I'm trying to install Oncommand host package 1.1 but the installation hangs. From the release notes there's a know issue telling that the installer can hang on 64 bit machines and as a workaround it's suggested to install it on 32 bit machine. The problem is the 32 bit software will not install on that server because the package is for 32 bit only.

There's any way to install the plugin changing that env variable or the only way is to install it on a different (32 bit) server? What's QTP, can it be uninstalled? Any solution or hotfix that will be out soon?

Thanks

Francesco

Installation may hang due to conflict

OnCommand Host Package may hang during installation due to a conflict between QTP and Java Service Wrapper.

If you are installing a 64-bit version of OnCommand Host Package, the installation may hang due to a resource conflict between QTP and Java Service Wrapper. On 64-bit systems, QTP sets the _JAVA_OPTIONS system environment variable. The Java Service Wrapper reads _JAVA_OPTIONS and attempts to load a 32-bit dll. This will cause the installer to hang.

Workaround: This is not an issue with 32-bit versions of OnCommand Host Package.

Just wanted to add a "me too": installation hangs on two different servers (both 64-bit) and the so called workarounds are not acceptable: using VSC circumvents the whole point of using OnCommand in the first place (i.e. having SnapVault capability, and no: sv-smvi is *NOT* an option) and the statement from the release notes about using a 32-Bit installer does not work, if one does not have a 32-Bit server to begin with!

vCenter 4.1 *requires* a 64 Bit Windows, so the majority of customers is probably going to use that as the "natural" server to install the host package to, which seems to have quite some chance to simply "not work".

It has been quite some time, since the host package has been out, and since even the release notes mention this very problem, NetApp definitely *KNOWS* that there is a problem, yet has not bothered to provide a viable fix. I have a seriously p*****d customer right now, who is also not really willing to set up a 32 Bit Server just for this, especially considering, that he may have to migrate this to 64-Bit as soon as a fix is released.

So... Would anyone from NetApp maybe give a statement on this, as this gives off a really, really bad impression (known bug, real life problem, still no fix after several months) 😞

Sorry for "venting"...

Hello,

if the installation hangs, you an try the following.

Open the TaskManager and go to processes.

On an 64bit Windows you maybe see an cmd.exe *32 processes.

After killing this process the installation continues.

On an 32bit Windows there could be more than one, so you should maybe open the TaskManager an look if there are other cmd.exe.

Then kill ohly the "new" - and only when the installer hangs, not before.
