dfm server upgrade

Hi dfm team,

Good day to you guys. I've a dfm server installed in our environment which monitors all the NetApp filers.  Currently it's installed on Win2k3 32 bit OS with 4 cpu & 4g RAM on a VM.  We are planning to migrate the DFM server to a physical machine as we are experiencing a sluggish response from VM.

The physical that I'm planning to migrate is win2k3 64 bit with 6g RAM.  Here is the dfm  migration path that I'm gonna perform

DFM/OM version: 3.8

Migration Steps:

1.Do a dfm backup on DFM VMWare instance and copy the backup to NFS/CIFS
location
2.Do a dfm license list & copy all those licenses.
3.Shutdown the DFM server on the VMware server.
4.Install a fresh copy of DFM on the physical server using the licenses
copied above.
5.After successful, Restore the backup that we took in step 1.

My questions:

1. My existing DFM server is 32 bit machine, will the database restore work on 64 bit machine seamlessly ?

2. Do you foresee any problem in above migration method ?

3. Do I need do anything with perf dir

4. We use PM  as well. Do you any known problems.

1. Database restore will work fine without any problems.

2. Nope.  However, I would suggest you to alter the steps so that you will have very less downtime of DFM server.

a. Ensure you have enough space on the physical machine - both for the backup file as well as space for unzipping it.

b. List out all the licenses

c. Take a DFM backup on VM, and simulataneously install DFM on the physical system

d. Restore the DB on physical system

e. Shutdown DFM on VM if the restore works fine.  (In case there is any issue in the restore process, this step will ensure that the monitoring is kept running).

3. Step 2a. should take care of this.

4. I have no idea for this.

Hi SMC,

Please find my answers inline

>1. My existing DFM server is 32 bit machine, will the database restore work on 64 bit machine seamlessly ?

: Yes, after database restore DFM will work seamlessly

2. Do you foresee any problem in above migration method ?

: No

3. Do I need do anything with perf dir

: No. The database backup & restore will take care of copying the perf files to the destination machine

4. We use PM as well. Do you any known problems.

: I have not much idea about PM. But I'm giving it a try.

Make sure the time/date is same on both the servers.

Once you shutdown the VMWare server and bring up the physical server,

keep the VMWare in passive mode(service shutdown) till you are comfortable enough to make sure that the new physical machine is working fine. After this, un-install DFM on VMWare.

Apart from those mentioned by Ranga and Prasad , I want to add one point.

Run 'dfm diag -s -p' in the existing set up to gather an idea about the size of your installation. For ex. it will list the perf data directory size, db size etc.

Your new installation path should have free space more than that size.

No issues.

just take care of the point that i mentionde below.
3. Do I need do anything with perf dir
no...
4. We use PM  as well. Do you any known problems.
PM schedules are run/scheduled as per the dfmserver timezone so make sure both are in the same timezone.

Hi Satty,

Pls take care of the following as they are not copied or contained in dfm backups.

The following folders are not part of the archive-based backup:
❖ Reports
This folder contains the output of scheduled reports. You can use the
dfm options list reportsArchiveDir command to locate
the reports folder.

❖ Plugins( copy if you have any additional plugin that is not installed in the new dfm server as part of installtion)
This folder contains filer plugins. If you want these filer plugins in
DataFabric Manager server 3.8, then make sure that you copy them
manually to the new location. You can use the dfm options list
pluginsDir command to locate the plugins folder.
❖ Data( this actually contains your db backups created via dfm backup create cli)
This folder contains the DataFabric Manager database backups and the
monitordb.db and monitordb.log files. You can use the dfm options
list databaseBackupDir command to locate the data folder.
Note
You should not copy monitordb.db and montirodb.log files to DataFabric
Manager server 3.8.
❖ DataExport
This folder contains the output of "dfm data export" command. You can
use the dfm options list dataExportDir command to locate
the plugins folder.

If you use DFM to enforce storage system configurations then please note that the DFM DB backup does not include any additonal configuration plugin templates you may have installed above the base product.

Use dfm plugin list on your VM server and physical server to ensure all the configuration plugins are present on the physical server when you restore the database.  If they are not all present then you are going to have to install each one manually using dfm plugin add.

The plugins are available from the NOW site.
