The comment in the config and manual is clear that it should be writable to the oracle user, but should the "Backup Control File" be on the volume where the snapshot is happening?

Normally I put the Control File Backup in a folder into the Archive log directory. In this way I get it backupped every time I do a backup (full backup or only archive log backup).

I think we will put the backups with the Data files. I think the most important part is that they be on a volume that is part of the snapshot. Thanks

If you only do "full" backup that include Data Dir it should be OK but Snap Creator do a CNTRL file backup also when you backup Archivelog only and in that case if you put it in your Oracle Data directory you will not get that istance_preBackup_trace file backed up.
You can also put the backup controlfile for full backup in data directory and the one done with archivelog backup in archive directory.

Francesco
