Bidirectional sync of a volume still not a "native" option?

We have two clusters in two sites and we want to have a volume on each cluster that is synced bidirectionally with RW access on each volume.  Looking at other posts, it seems like this still isn't a "native" option using SnapMirror, SnapVault, or even SyncMirror and if we want to do that we need a 3rd party product like PeerSync, is that correct?

Yes that is correct.  All snapmirror, vault, etc really on one volume being read/write the target volume being type data protection that keeps it from being written to unless the snapmirror relations is broken.

That is what Flexcache is for.

How far are the sites away?

Flexcache may be a good option here then.
