SnapMirror between Data ONTAP Edge

Hi Folks,

I'm trying to build demo environment with VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager and Data ONTAP Edge.

Is it possible to create snapmirror relation between Data ONTAP Edges.

I can create snapmirror relation (Site A -> Site B) with Oncommand GUI.

But I cannot initialize the relation with error "cannot connect to source filer (13201)"

Site A:

     Windows: 192.168.42.1

          vCenter Server 5.1

          Site Recovery Manager 5.1

          Oncommend 2.0

     ESXi: 192.168.42.41, 192.168.44.41

     Data ONTAP Edge: 192.168.44.82

Site B:

     Windows: 192.168.52.1

          vCenter Server 5.1

          Site Recovery Manager 5.1

          Oncommend 2.0

     ESXi: 192.168.52.41, 192.168.54.41

     Data ONTAP Edge: 192.168.54.82

All networks are 24bits-masked and are routed by one Vyatta VM without firewall settings.

ping test OK:

     192.168.44.82 (ontap) <-> 192.168.54.82 (ontap)

telnet test OK:

     192.168.42.1 (win site A) -> 192.168.44.82:{10566,10569} (ontap site A)

     192.168.52.1 (win site B) -> 192.168.44.82:{10566, 10569} (ontap site A)

     192.168.42.1 (win site A) -> 192.168.54.82:{10566,10569} (ontap site B)

     192.168.52.1 (win site B) -> 192.168.54.82:{10566, 10569} (ontap site B)

I believe only Data ONTAP Edge-T provides SnapMirror capabilities.

Thanks for your advice.

I could resolve this problem with following action.

1. add naming resolution

2. add setting for remote access (snapmirror.allow)

I demonstrated this SRM 5.1 Demo Env. with ONTAP Edges at VMware booth in NetApp Innovation 2012 Tokyo, 6th Dec.

These ONTAP Edges runs on a physical ONTAP, thus this is "Nested ONTAP". furthermore this env. runs with nested ESXi and nested ONTAP.

# Nested ONTAP is not compatible configuration for ONTAP Edge.

I had built this env. for few days even though I had no experience for ONTAP.

I'm impressed ease of use with ONTAP and I think netapp dedup should be highly evaluated widely.

Caution: unfortunately ONTAP Edge is not certified storage as nfs/iscsi datastores by VMware.

     check VMware compatibility guide http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php

- login the console of a ONTAP Edge

- enter "setup"

- after some questions, you can find a question whether you enable DNS service or not. Enable it.

- finish all of "setup" questions.

- reboot

- check that DNS service is enabled on OnCommand.

take same procedure with another ONTAP Edge.

probably you can add combinations of hosts and ip addresses at "Network Files".

- login to OnCommand

- Open ONTAP Edge

- navigate "system name" > "SnapMirror" > "Remote Access" > "Add"

     Remote System: the name of another ONTAP Edge

     Volume or Qtree: All_volumes

take same procedure with another ONTAP Edge.
