In Data ONTAP 7.x there is an explicit statement that SnapMirror in synchronous mode is supported only between heads (controllers) of the same type. Is this limitation still valid in Data ONTAP 8.1.x? (for example: between FAS3210 and FAS3220)

Hi,
You can have different systems at both ends.
This is worth bearing in mind though:
https://library.netapp.com/ecmdocs/ECMP1113990/html/GUID-3F1D5CD0-8E81-44FC-8851-F5664E6DE35F.html
"The type of system and the disk configuration on the destination system affects the performance of the source system. Therefore, the destination system should have the bandwidth required for the increased traffic and for message logging."
Regards,
Radek
