Snapshot size when data is moved

Hi,

I've got quite simple question:

Monday:

/vol/volume/qtree1 - 500g full

/vol/volume/qtree2 - 0g full

Monday: snapshot is made on the /vol/volume

Tuesday: the 500g from /vol/volume/qtree1 is moved to /vol/volume/qtree2

What will happen? Will the snapshot size still be close to 0 (since no data has change) or will it have 500g, because data was moved from first location, even though it's still on the volume, but in different location?

In other words, will the /vol/volume need 500g more space available for that operation?

Regards

Tomek

Hi Tomasz,

Not sure whether it is ONTAP version / client-dependent, but with 8.1.2 & Widows 2003 client no extra space is taken when a file is moved between qtrees within the same volume.
