The best way to move a SVM with volumes from one site to the other in a IP Metrocluster?

Due to space issues, we need to move volumes from one SVM on Site 2 to a new SVM on Site 1.

Is vol rehost not  supported in a metrocluster? Ref. https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap/volumes/features-supported-volume-rehost-concept.html

Then the only option is to snapmirror the volumes and recreate the SVM, correct?

yes, but probably need to setup the new SVM, but this is probably a better solution than going out and then back, as I suggested.

vol rehost only works with-in the cluster and it looks like from your query that there is a space issue , so you will be moving it outside of the current cluster ?

I just came across this TR, take a look

Migrating an SVM into a MetroCluster solution using SnapMirror asynchronous replication:

If you decide to move volume, then snapmirror will be needed (I am guessing, I am not mc expert) on the mc-site,  and then it will be automatically mirrored to partner mc-site.

We have to move it, because one of the sites in a MC has one extra shelf connected temporarily hosting a NAS SVM that we will move the volumes into MC aggregates afterwards. Unfortunately it seems asynch SM is not supported between MC sites, I am not sure why it says so:

"This process is not supported for migrating SVMs between two MetroCluster infrastructures.
ONTAP currently restricts migration between two clusters that are part of a MetroCluster
infrastructure" -See under "Limitations" in the TR

Yes, that document clearly states in title - "Migrating an SVM into a MetroCluster solution", and not between. I don't know the answer to be honest, you might want to reach out to your NetApp account manager for remediation of this issue. In the mean time, you can wait to hear from MC experts in the forum.

I guess the the current SVM volume (i.e  running low on volume space), has mirrored partner -mc (sync-destination), on the other site ? This is where it gets complicated I think.  Considering If the volume is moved other side, will it not mirrored back from the SVM it is moved to ?, unless it is non-mirrored volume ?

I found a workaround. Check the comment in the end of this post: https://community.netapp.com/t5/Tech-ONTAP-Blogs/Migrate-your-stand-alone-SVM-into-a-MetroCluster-solution/ba-p/443251

ie. move it off the MC to a a standalone Netapp filer, then use the method in TR-4966 xto migrate it from there into Site 1.

You can't rehost volume outside a cluster.

You need to use SnapMirror to move volumes from one cluster to other cluster inside the MCC IP.
