do you know if you can reformat a netapp shelf without attaching it to the head unit?

We have to return a couple of shelves, but they have been detached from the head unit.

Is there any way to wipe them without reconnecting them?

No.  Must attached to a controller, same or different with same or higher ONTAP rev without dealing with raid labels.

Disk Sanitization is the option you would need to license and enable and then you can sanitize them.  Poor mans wipe, would be to reattached, delete the imported aggrs and then zero spares.
